The primary purpose of marching band is still the music. Music is not a sport, so marching band is not a sport. In most marching bands, the music is superb by music standards, but "professional marchers" (if that's even a thing) would wipe the field with the the marching required in marching band. It's hard to play music like they do, but it wouldn't be hard to walk in circles and patterns, thus, it should be considered a musical competition because that's where the majority of their skill is demonstrated

Any DCI wipes high school and college marching bands in both aspects, there are professional marching bands, look at any DCI group and then some of the Texas State champions in 6A, you will see

Yes it is a sport. The High School I came from did not have a competitive Marching Band. They just played half time football shows. I will be honest, 4 years ago I didn't consider it a sport, based on my experiences from my high school Marching Band. Then, my oldest joined the Marching Band in our current school district. They compete every single Saturday after Labor Day. I have learned, watching her and being a Marching Band Mom, yes it is a sport. Hours upon hours of practicing the same steps to get it on point. Going to State competition at Lucas Oil. It is a sport! 4 years in as a mom, I was wrong to think it wasn't a sport. Currently she has a knee brace, ankle brace, and wrapped toe just to keep marching and competing. They put in more months and hours of work than I did when I was a softball player in high school.

(this is for the dude in the comments who thinks he knows everything). first of all what you just posted right here just tells me that you know nothing if you think what we do is "walk" and play music in hot whether you literally don't understand the discipline and hard work and practice to be in it yeah football takes practice and hard work but our style and foundation of marching branches off from the military not only is that hard work but that's pushing your self to your limit trying to get as close to perfect as possible marching at unbelievably fast tempos trying not to dislocate or brake anything not only is it physical but you also need to think and learn how to play an instrument not as easy as you think and you also have to remeber alot of steps, visuals, and sets something you wouldn't know about so before you judge us do your research and actually do the sport yet your just one of those people I guess oh and yes we have competition and compete for the top you don't know discipline until you've been taught under a band director yes we actually do have to run and do excercises to keep up with the physical demand that marching has that's what PT is for don't even get me started on the literal blood sweat and tears we shead each rehearsal each rep we have to go over we are a team we do not fight when we are on the field we have to forget about every problem/drama we have with someone because we're a team we deserve the title of a sport more than anything/anyone

Its Tuesday and Thursday 10-12 5:30- 7:30 For four weeks then band camp. And we leave and go to someone and don't have our phone and we don't go home until Saturday Its Sunday to Saturday. I consider Drum Corp a sport, but in between for Marching Band. Drum Corp practices a lot harder musics and drills, and they practice almost 12 hours a day under the summer sun. Marching Band is an in between for me because some people have easier drills and not as that hard musics to memorize. Like I could remember the opener by the end of the 1st week of band camp.

But I just don't think it's a sport. I'm also an athlete and have played many sports, and I just think marching band is a different entity, but not a sport. It takes a lot of very hard work and determination, but so do a lot of things in life. Doesn't necessarily mean it's a sport, though.

Now, i'm not trying to start an argument or anything, but it does fill all of the requirements for a sport, and we DO (or at least my school's band does) earn more trophies than the football, basketball, soccer, tra- ah you get it. We have the most trophies. Then again our football team sucks. I'm a freshman on my drumline, got lucky to receive the.... "honor".... of First. (Not sure what they were thinking. This probably happened to Thomas.

I've played football at my high school, was in ROTC, was in wrestling, am an active freerunner and tumbler, is a respected dancer, and did numerous strength and conditioning camps.... Nothing compares to the difficulty of marching band. You will never understand until you have to do it. We may be nerds, but it's the fact that we make it look easy is why you say that. Thank you for saying we're good at what we do :). Oh and one more thing just to throw that out there. In Drum Corps an average marcher consumes 4000-6000 calories per day and drinks about three gallons of water per day on top of that. And still gets dehydrated and has the chance of collapsing due to physical limits being broken, and medical personnel on standby. I'm talking training that challenges marines. All while have the lung capacity of an Olympic swimmer. (<---Has been compared and proven) Just saying.

I'm not saying that it is the toughest sport.... But too many people have downgraded marching band and think that they would be able to do it first try. It is physically and mentally painful at times and it meets all the requirements of that of a sport. For example, a marching baritone can weigh up to 15 pounds, and you are forced to stand with perfect posture and with your arms up and out (for up to 10-13 minutes). You are standing in the blazing hot sun (for up to 9 hours), marching and cramping up. I for sure know it is not the toughest sport, but we work just as hard as any other sport. We compete just like any other sport. We have the same mindset and skill set as any other sport. A senior in my band did DCI, and he lost about 50 pounds because of so much physical activity. You can never look down, always look straight up and move together with each other as one. It is a beautiful thing, that is so under appreciated.

Drum line throws band over the edge into the sports category in my opinion. Being able to march (crabbing), staying on your toes (imagine calf raises for 8-10 minutes if you aren't in band. Try some if you haven't done them) maintaining good stick heights (because the audience can see them, but they can't exactly see a band member playing with bad technique) playing the music right, and carrying a heavier instrument (snare, bass, tenors) is physically and mentally demanding. Now, I didn't include some things like watching the drum major, not looking down, or hitting your dot, because the whole band does that. All of these plus the fact that we compete (yes, compete! A part of the OFFICIAL definition of sports) makes me believe that marching band can be considered a sport. (As a backup reference, a study was done, and drum line and band members have heart rates that "rival that of athletes")

Ok, I think it's generally accepted and proven that marching band and drum & bugle corp alike are sports. The definition of a sport mentioned in many of the other comments on this video clearly imply that band is a sport. Now, I'm not saying band is absolutely the single most exerting thing you can do ever( though in DCI, they often have close to the same heart rates as world class "athletes" in the traditional sense of the word, as in sprinters and such) but it definitely requires a fair amount of physical ability. Now, it is right to say some kids in high school marching bands aren't in the best shape. To them, the physical exertion of marching a show will seem harder. But, even the kids in peek physical condition are winded and sweating at the end of a run of the show. Just look at DCI for example. There is not one overweight member in any corp, because come summer rehearsals, with weeks upon weeks of 12 hour blocks, you've either quit, or lost the weight you had before you joined the corp. Though in my opinion a case can be made to not call College marching band a sport because they don't actually compete against each other in an organized fashion.
@superspiffy1909

I would consider marching band to be a sport but band kids make it sound so hard when really it's not. I think this is due to the fact that most band players aren't in the greatest shape, well at least not at my school. I have been in football, hockey, hunting, sweet and boxing before and I just recently started cross country. And to be honest cross country has been the most difficult sport and it really puts you in shape. Heck, I doubt most band kids can even run a 1/2 mile before crying for mercy. Let alone we do 5k's in meets and around 7-10 miles in practice every day after school and on the weekends. So yeah I would consider marching band a sport but it is definitely not even close to the hardest or toughest sport out their.
@planetparadox9798
@planetparadox9798 9 жыл бұрын
I believe that where the difficulty lies is the fact that not only are you required to move in ways for a constant period of time that are painful and complex, but you are also required to memorize musical notes, phrasing, dynamics, and timing. When it's all said and done, a person should be tired after a full run because it is taxing not only on the body but also on the mind.
@lucylee8465
@lucylee8465 9 жыл бұрын
+Super Spiffy yeah you're being really rude. You doubt most band kids can run 1/2 a mile? I doubt you're telling the truth. In band, you are sprinting across the field keeping perfect posture all while watching technique. practices last around 12 hours on weekends/everyday during band camp. and that's just the band. there's also the colorguard where people are dancing, jumping, flipping, running, tossing basically doing anything that'll look good at comps. So saying band kids wouldn't be able to run a mile not only is being incredibly rude, but also just generalizing
@elizaloewen-thomas7635
@elizaloewen-thomas7635 9 жыл бұрын
+Super Spiffy I can understand where you're coming from, but it's obvious you have never done marching band. Some are a lot tougher than others. First off, you have band camp. For us, its 12 hours for 12 days, only having sundays off. That's also in august and in the burning sun. Weekly, you have 3+ practices that are quite long and then an all day practice Saturday. In my marching band, for every single person that does not fill out their dotbook, its a lap for everyone. Sometimes that's over 30 laps. You have to memorize where you're supposed to be at every single moment and you have to stay so focused. We do conditioning as well, running laps, and doing many different types of warm ups. I realize that it is definitely not the toughest sport out there and in some ways I would consider it an art. But if you went through one practice in my marching band, I'm sure you would cry for mercy even holding the tiniest instrument. There's a ton of technique to it and it is very, very hard. I'm sorry that you disagree, but I'm the one who does it and does many other sports. I would consider it very difficult. Sorry, just needed to get that off my chest.

+Super Spiffy and saying that you've seen some out of shape? I've seen tons of football, baseball, basketball etc out of shape. Homeboy, lots of us have abs. Ive seen many of the boys abs and let me tell you. Better than many other athletes. I'm in great shape, and all of my marching band friends are as well.

Usually some field shoes are equivalent to 2 miles. Imagine running that show everyday from September-November over and over. During a show one must be constantly thinking about core strength when applying it to visuals so u don't fall over. Plus using your air to play through your instrument while marching. That's just high school. DCI is marching band times 10,000

All I have to say is that it's not a sport it's an art. People say they u have to multitask which is an art. Plus many people think it's a sport and they fight about it. To me who cares if it's a sport or not just do what u like to do

The definition of a sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” That’s exactly what marching band is.

This is to all those no counts who think they're "athletes" just because they can throw or catch a ball while the marching band is working their tails off to present the audience with a decent show, you can already go die in a hole since that's where you're going to be in about 20 years.

+Drekherd I'm sorry, but... Who are you again?... Oh, yeah! You're one of those people who commented on one of my comments forever ago who said marching band is not a sport despite never being in marching band! You only have a friend that is in marching band. So, how do you know marching band is not a sport? Do you not see the effort of the marching band when they march by you during their show? Or are you another no count who goes over to the football team to congratulate them on almost winning. Listen, anyone can run for a bit, catch a ball, and get tackled but it takes actual skill and commitment to do marching band. But, yeah, maybe you're right. Maybe it's not a sport. Maybe it's an art.

Marching band is a sport. Why? Because: -You have to play your music from memory. -You have to stay in 100 degree heat for about 5 hours for practice. -You have muscle pains from doing so much marching and holding your instrument up for long periods of time. -You have to memorize how many steps you take and where to go on the field. -You have to maintain good posture, marching skills, techniques, and excellent playing. -There are marching band competitions. -Multitasking. Lots of multitasking. -You have to keep your footsteps in time. -You cannot look down at where you're going or turn your head. You must always looks forward. -If you mess up a solo or trip and fall on the field, you feel incredibly nervous and terrible. -Marching band uniforms are usually itchy, big, and it gets very hot when you wear one. -If it was easy to do everyone would be in marching band. If you don't think marching band is difficult or a sport, you are crazy.
