I had a 3rd grade teacher that , on rainy days recess, had us all move our desks so we could square dance. Loved it. 😊

I had to do this in elementary school in the 80s. At the time I didn’t like it… but now I see the value. I bet it’s also fun.

I grew up in a town called Campbell Missouri, in the southeast bootheel of the state. Square dancing was a daily exercise up till 10th grade. I got my future ex-wife pregnant about that time.

That is so neat!!!!! I remember dancing square dance as a kid in the Hidden Valley Grange on Saturday nights. The Hidden Valley Grange is near Watsonville California, and on Hidden Valley Road. I wonder if it is still there and in operation?

Perhaps the square-dance is derived from earlier European folk dances such as English barn dances. I tried to folk dance at university but was worse than awful :)

Quite different to the 'Cindy' singing call I learned! A few phrases are the same, but my version doesn't have any of the "Oh, Susanna" tune in it. Also, no changing partners. But it does contain "go through the open windows": "First couple down the centre, split the ring in two, (between cpl 3, separate round outside) Go through the open windows, and swing your Cindy Lou. (single hand arches cpls 2 & 4) Circle six hands round them, circle as you go, (circle left, 1st cpl swinging in the middle) Circle six hands round them, and promenade her home, Promenade home lady Cindy, promenade home; (promenade other way, swinging cpl Promenade home lady Cindy, promenade home. join in their place, all back to place) (rpt with 2nd cpl, etc....) I may have remembered the words wrong, but I've been calling it for years like this, and it works really well. The tune "Cindy" as I know it has 2 x A music, and 1 x B music (the 'B' is the "Promenade home..." bit)
