When I cut or drill steel used outside I put some paint on the newly exposed metal to keep it from rusting. Even nail polish. Doesn't matter what color it is.

I think you should just elevate the one barrel higher than the other. Just use some pallets to raise it up might be an idea instead of getting another downspout.

@@BasecampUnbounded There ya go. Give that a try. You can always drill a hole in both barrels to have one flow into the other if one is elevated higher. When it gets to the height of the pipe it will flow automatically into the other.

They can be the same level. The connecting hose will fill the second barrel when the water reaches that level.
