So disappointed that I never heard Brownie play in person. I did hear Sonny Rollins in London just once, but never any of the other players. A great frustration of my life is that I was born too late!

Hawkins was the Godfather of the tenor sax, proven by his matchless improvisation on Body and Soul.

The difference between this and other versions of the same song, is that in this, we don't hear the sound of the saxophone, but hear crying and singing of a human person. This is one of those songs where, somehow, an instrument disappeared and what left was just one man.

The best between him and Ben Webster , magic jazz masters Not to mention Lester Young , the bird came a little later. A true masterpiece of pure improvisation, beyond beautiful ❤

I bought Daddy Plays The Horn 40 plus years ago, in a small record store in my hometown, and THIS track ignited my love affair with bebop jazz. This track literally changed my life.

I played this song at a gig in the Isle of Man in 1988 when Scott Hamilton was top of a jazz festival weekend there, it was such a joy to to play the contrabass behind such a towering talent as Scott.

Swaying to the feeling good things are on the distant horizon over yonder beside the ebullient waters washing all cares away far flung thoughts of better happier times for us like the time oh well its best we just move on what is one love affair in the lives of busy people stranger to themselves even more so to each other in ways only from a distance far from the fact a glimmer of perspective offers a breath of hope that this time it will be different and we will know why the wyvern haunts our endeavors.
