The question is irrelevant. And the information provided by the lady is not good as well. I'll explain... *WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION* The weight distribution is what will make you sink more, or less. The larger the surface of the snowshoe, the less you'll sink. This has nothing to do with "modern" or "traditional". You can sink more with a traditional than using a modern one. It all depends on the surface of the snowshoes. SHAPE There are numerous shapes and not two first nations were suing the same shape. For exemple, the ones in dense forest were using the bear paw because it's much smaller, so easier to navigate in the woods. Other nations were using the "traditional" showshoes, as we know them, in less dense forest or plain grounds. TERRAIN Are you going to use them on flat terrain? maintained trails? non-maintained trails? mountain? All this makes a difference. For example, you may need bigger snowshoes, but if in a mountain, those snowshoes will become like skis! So beware.... MSR The lady says she chosen the MSR because of the traction. Those snowshoes are really not great. They're optimal in mountain with not much snow or on maintained trails (in mountain). Other than that, there many other brands and models much better than MSR. IMPORTANT FEATURE The fastening system is important. The ratchet one is nice, but the more parts, the more then chance for a failure. The ones you have to pull hard to then set the hook through a hole are more reliable, but such a pain to deal with! The "belt type", like the one used with the leather bindings is "ok". IMPORTANT DECISION FACTOR the very first thing to know is how much do you weight (be honest!), then add 10% (winter clothing is heavy), and consider the fact that you may also carry a backpack. Then check the manufacturer's specs vs the total weight you've calculated. And don't trust too much the manufacturer's specs. If it says good up to 200lbs, then think 185-190 max. LAST I have probably like 10 pairs of snowshoes, traditional, modern and military. I select the one to use depending on all the above mentionned factors. And if I had to keep only one, it'd probably be a modern one, but a GOOD modern one and not those MSR. My go to are size 10x36 with a good "claw grip" under. They allow me to be at ease on both trails and deep snow. And this having a backpack or not. (I'm 6'2" and football player shape). Many could get away with one size down or even less if you're going to use maintained trails only.

We have Two pairs of MSR lightnings. I have the same bindings however and all the straps suddenly disintegrated over the course of Two seasons. The plastic silicone and rubber rot, and you won’t notice it until going out in the cold and they become even more brittle. Replaced the straps only to find the soles disintegrating the same manner, requiring the entire replacement of the bindings. MSR has been unresponsive over the past three years, with Various excuses and now blaming supply chain issues…. Even as they continue selling new snowshoes. Time to go with a different brand because this is just unsafe.
@PaulTarsitano2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for address this. Snowshoes can be seen as a safety tool, thus MSR needs to address this before a serious mishap develops during an adventure, work outing, and or a emergency situation.

I have a set of atlas that had both heel straps rot and break at the same time. Terrible material. It is irresponsible of the companies to make equipment that could very well compromise someone's life just so they can save a few dimes. There are much better materials that can stand up to the environment the snow shows endure. Imagine dying because of the decision to not give a shit if your product fails someone. It just BS.

Thank you. Was it the regular parking area for the main trail? It does seem different. Also, I think that part of the hiking trail would be too steep for the snowshoes. I think that there are cross-country trails in the area. Adjacent to McCrea. Is it where you went?
@PaulTarsitano3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the main parking lot and trail. Yes, but the snowshoes had very good traction made for steep slopes..

Well, lets see, Paul. He is dressed in layers. He is keeping hydrated. When he stops he puts on a balaclava since heat is lost through the head and neck area. He stops before he is in danger. He uses a multi-layer bag system. He uses chemical heat pads to raise help warm him. He brings his water inside the bag, assuming it will be warmed and require less body heat to warm it when consumed. He removes his cold outer footwear. Wraps himself up snugly in his bag covering his head. That's all I got Paul. Timely video. Thanks.
