The year was 2018. I played the Ugly Duckling in a local production of Shrek the Musical. It was one of the happiest times in my life; not only do I love to sing and perform, but I had some of the best friends I had ever had. My best friend at the time (who I'll call B) played Pinocchio. Shortly after I had talked about how I notice when singers add extra syllables to words (as well as other small details I tend to notice in people), I was listening to B rehearsing the song "Story of My Life". I noticed a prime example of this "adding syllables" thing when I observed that in the line "Story of my life, always doomed to fail, cheated by a fox, swallowed by a whale", B pronounced the word "fail" seemingly with a second syllable, which sounded more like "fay-il". Normally this would annoy me, but in this particular case I found it funny, as for some reason he pronounced "whale" normally, but did not do the same for its rhyme. I brought it up to him in a completely neutral observation, and he started noticing when he and others were doing the same thing. Eventually, it became a running joke of ours that every time one of us said "fail" or a word that rhymed with it, we added the extra syllable. This and some of the other inside jokes we had from that show became some of my fondest memories, and felt like a sort of turning point in my life which led me to becoming who I am now. A few months after the show had ended, I rebranded this channel to my current username, with the 23 also being a reference to Shrek the Musical. Using Fayil as a name brings me a sense of joy, as not only is it unique, it reminds me of those times, as well as reflects the part of my personality that will do anything to continue the bit, even if it may no longer be funny. Flash forward to now. I am feeling nostalgic and decide to start listening to the Shrek the Musical soundtrack on my drive to work. I hadn't listened to the broadway versions of the songs since before I did the show, although I was told that Pinocchio did add an extra syllable in the same place in the broadway version. Hearing John Tartaglia's performance for the first time in 5 years, I noticed the southern-sounding accent he had. As B only added the extra syllable because he was using the broadway version as a guideline, I started to feel bad that all this time the bit originated from me unintentionally mocking someone's accent. As I knew nothing about John at that point, I looked him up out of pure curiosity to find out where he was from. I was surprised to learn he was from New Jersey, and I was relieved that the accent was intentional and I was not making fun of something he only did due to a regional difference in pronunciation. After making this search, I ended up getting lost in his Wikipedia page, and I learned just how many things he was known for. I went down a rabbit hole of content which eventually led me to this video. What caught my attention about it was at 0:15. The way he says the word "being" almost sounds like it's missing a syllable, sounding more like "beeng". This made be smile in a way I knew was exclusive to me. This was the anti-"fayil". My counterpart, if you will. So thank you, random KZbin user, for posting this song. I highly doubt you posted this obscure clip from an almost 20 year old kids' show expecting such a long and specific response from a complete stranger, but if you did take the time to read it, I hope you found Fayil23's origin story (the story of MY life, if you will) interesting.
