Would you plz also tell me about the soda-ash bath you applied between colorings? Specifically, what’s in the bath and, proportionally, what’s unique about your vs?

Thanks for the question, @aaronlee7325 I use a soda ash bath anytime I am using "fiber reactive procion" dyes. The soda ash is what adheres the vibrant color to the fabric. I typically use 1 cup of soda ash and enough hot water to cover 1lb of fabric and let it soak for 20-25minutes. I place it on a rack and let it air dry for about 24hrs before tying it up and applying dyes.

Can you explain the second cycle wherein you sprinkle the ash, plum and hydrangea, and ice layer? My main question is whether that last dye set finds its way into the fibers consistently despite only being sprinkled against the one side. Is that what the ice is for, as it melts? TIA

Another great question, @aaronlee7325 this is one reason I really LOVE creating ice dyed items - it's like magic! If I want more concentrated color, I apply my dye powders directly on the fabric and then add the ice and top with soda ash to give a little extra support for the color to adhere. The slow drip of the melting ice most definitely soaks through the fabric for "all over color." If I want more varied color (what are known as "splits"), I place the ice on the fabric first, and then the dye powder and soda ash and let it do its thing. A "split" is when the different color dye particles that have been combined to create a single color (think red + blue = purple) are able to separate out and show themselves. So from a single purple dye powder, you would have purple hues AND blue hues AND red hues. Have you ever tried color removal with Out White Brite? I'm experimenting with it, and it seems to work pretty well, without the damaging effects of bleach. I'm just starting my tie dye journey, so I have a lot to learn and experiment with. I'm looking at "off the beaten path" techniques, which is why your video caught my attention. Your experiment turned out really cool!

Welcome to the tie dye world!!! I have tried Out White Brite. It does the job but, for me, bleach gives a better result. Don't get me wrong - I have ruined PLENTY of shirts by letting it set too long!!!! However, art can be made out of anything and a buddy of mine takes them and makes the best 80's fringe/beaded crop tops with them. HAHA! Feel free to ask any questions during your journey! Just remember to always have fun with it!!
