I really wish canada treated clinical and non-clinical jobs like america. You need certifications for EVERYTHINGGGGG in order to even tough the lab. The anerican dream is better than the canadian dream I can tell you that much.

I have a BS in Biology and I'm stuck in the same job. I didn't graduate with a high enough GPA. I feel that I wasted a lot of years of my life to complete my BS. I'm not young anymore. I can't move forward with a low GPA. I was planning on going to PA school but nothing after 3 years trying. So I decided to give DPT a shot but again, nothing. So that's why I'm stuck. After 19 years in the ER as a tech I feel burnt out and don't really want to deal with patients anymore. I'm trying to look for something else. It's really depressing to me. I would try medical technologist but the hospital that I work at only accepts one person for their program. I haven't looked into school for this because I really don't know if I want to be locked into this field that has a salary cap.

Yea, I got my Bio degree 3 years ago, wanted to go for PA as well so I got a job in the ER but as a behavioral Health tech. ( I dislike the job alot and also was assaulted by a patients on multiple occastions) Now I think about what I can do but it seems the only options are more school. After these past 2 years in the ER. I am depressed and really don't want to work in a hospital. U said you have been there for 19 years and applied to PA school? You might have less luck because of how much time has passed and might need to retake the core classes they want. ( this is what I've read, but from what I know they want your grades to be recent; 5 years or less) I could be wrong about this tho so you should double check this. I am not sure what to do with this degree I have now because my "love" for the PA role is not really there. I contemplate if I should suck it up and do it for the money at this point because at least its stable income with benefits but the medical field is TIRING and Overwhelming and also PA school is no joke; classes are 9-5 all week and studying all the time is needed to pass weekly exams and its recommended you do not work. My coping strategies suck because I've turned to unhealthy food and drinking. besides that, I have experiences that cant be replicated anywhere else but for some reason also cant get my a decent paying job in another field w/o more school. Maybe I'm just lazy? Is it so wrong to want to love ur job?

@@blanket9890 Don't feel bad about your degree. I've been there and still dealing with the fact that I have a BS in Biology and can't really do anything unless I keep going into more school for a higher degree. I'm stuck because of all the years I've spent going to school and working part-time and building such a huge debt. All for nothing. Now I'm just an over educated bed cleaner (sorry to say this but at this new hospital that I work techs are very limited of what they can do in the ED). I honestly hate my job. I don't like dealing with patients anymore. They are so rude, racist at times, and they degrade you because of your title. Doing this for 19 years I feel that my time in the ED is over. Working for a hospital is really taxing with all the CEUs you gotta do, all these mandatory classes that really doesn't do anything but fulfill that departments protocols. You get shout outs for doing work beyond your scope. All that for nothing. For someone new, I guess this is ok because you're trying to fit in and show that you're committed. But for me, that ship has sailed. It's time to move on. I don't know how old you are but don't go to PA school for the money. Go for it because this is what you like to do. You don't always have to work in certain departments as a PA. If I was a PA I was going for cardiac or orthopedics and maybe as a hospitalist. All not stressful. With a BS you can do medical technologist, biology teacher, work in lab, maybe do a little bit of schooling to get into nuclear medicine. I was going to do that but I think I'm done with patient care. I've been out of work for a couple of months due to injury to my shoulder from work. Being at home is comfortable and I've been doing some tutorials on coding. I like it a lot because I'm not at the hospital and dealing with people. i go back next week and I'm most likely going to put in my 2 week notice. I'll do Uber/Lyft for the time being to pay bills and finish these coding classes.

@@johnguillen68 for reference im 25. Ive thought about ortho as well and have talked with an ortho PA about this due to tearing my ACL last year. I think its great U R looking into coding. it could lead to a great work from home position( at least that is the positive I see from it) I do not think what you have done is wasted time either. I think we have to experience these things to motivate us to do what really matters to us. It just sucks that sometimes we do not figure these things out until we are unhappy for a while or burnt out. The coding life could be something great that changes ur trajectory in life. I will continue to also find my passion in this crazy life with so many options. Also I am learning surely but slowly to give a f*ck what ppl think especially patients and coworkers. Unfortunately, ppl just cant or wont treat u the way u treat them. What a world...

@@blanket9890 Thank you for sharing your age. You have youth on your side which is great. Don't feel burnt out just yet. Shadow or volunteer at these places to see what they do on a regular basis. Maybe you might find something you like. Unfortunately, when dealing with the public you're going to find rude people either the patient is rude or your co-workers. There's always someone out there to test you. We can learn from it or not deal with it and move on. For me, I rather move on. I can't deal with stupidity anymore. It sucks to feel this way because I was "The Man" at other ERs that I've worked with, lol. I did everything except give meds to patients. At this hospital that I work at now, all that is gone. I'm more of a room cleaner and transporting patients. Which is fine for the money but doing less has made me realize that I don't want to do this anymore. I mean, I have a BS in Biology and I'm older than just about all who I work with. All the techs I work with either are trying to get into nursing school or are almost finished with nursing school. I thought I can go into nursing but I'm tired of smelling pee, poop, vomit, smelly people, and cleaning people. You can try to get into the cardiac field because that field is always going to be in demand and so is ortho. You being 25, you have many options. You must ask yourself, where do you want to be in 5 years? that's usually the amount of years it takes for people to find themselves in career choice. How do you see yourself in those years and what is it you want to do on your days off that your career will allow it? Do you want to travel? Look at it this way, if you get into PA school you'll be done in under 3 years. You can become a traveling PA and make so much money. There are other fields you can do as well. You can do Sonography and get into your own business or travel. You can teach biology at a private school where the students are willing to learn. I thought about this. I would teach differently than my biology professors did. Make it fun and apply real-life examples to intrigue students.

I’m currently getting a bachelors in biology with a minor and chemistry I should be done in two semesters, and the thought of going back to school to become a medical lab scientist is so discouraging. i’m hoping because I’ve worked in a few medical laboratories and have experience working in a laboratory setting. It will help me to get a job with my degree alone.
