It depends on the pieces of wood. Most bongos are around 7" x 9".

The sound of a drum is a complex relationship between the shell construction type, shell geometry, skin type, skin thickness and technique.

First thing in the sound is the player. Swen (the player in this vid) clearly is a great player, as well as a great craftsman. Second component is the skins. I’ve equipped one of my LP drums with one of his pre mounted heads, and it changed the drum. It used to sound OK, but had mismatched overtones. I had to severely limit the tuning range of the drum to attempt to minimize the issue. The Manito steer skin has eliminated the problem. The overtones are now inline with the fundamental tone, regardless of where I tune it. So the range of the drum has expanded significantly.

Hi. This is Swen. I handle the skins and PreMounted heads at Manito Percussion. I'm so glad you are enjoying the sound of your drum now. I need to let you know that Ryan 'Manito' Wendel builds the drums as well as performs for all videos. He's a much better player, and I'm comfortable engineering the recordings and editing videos.

I have four wood drums: 10” Neinl, 11” CP, and an LP Caliente 11 / 12 set. Three of the drums sound good as is, but the Caliente 11” has never been able to be tuned; while the head itself is good by LP standards, it was just never a match for the drum. I just took delivery on a Manito 1.8mm steer skin for that drum, and it is transformative. It not only makes that drum sound great, but it makes the whole set sound better.

Hey brother.. I may have a tip for you ... While I'm sure I'm no where remotely close to as many head as you've put on I have done my share.. one tool I came across years ago when I was working a lot with veg tan leather . Is a right or left handed curved lip shoe knife . It has a blunt end so it won't damage the playing surface.. I've used that knife on all my head replacements I think it works great for doing exactly what it's intended for.. there is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to resharpening though... Good luck hope that helps ... Oh and do you guy offer veterans discount? Sgt Rob..

Man, the skins sound spectacular under your hands. Been debating to do my drums. I have a 10” Meinl (30” tall), a CP 11”, and then an LP Caliente 11” and 12” set. These other three are all 28” tall. They sound good now, but I’m listening to you and others like you with the Manito skins and fantasizing how nice they’d be…. your playing is excellent.

Thank you for your guidance. I will be putting on a new head today on a set of LP Aspire that was given to me and I haven't been able to learn because the heads are old said the owner so I purchased today a new set of LP Aspire Rawhide heads for my Quinto and Conga Drums.

Thanks for the great tips! I’ve been having trouble making a nice clean cut to trim the excess skin. I’ve just been using a Stanley knife. I think I’ll go out and buy a carpet knife! How did you modify it for the job?
