Really love these kind of set up which transform from such small set of users to millions . But the belief that a small tech team is good enough once they get through the roots of the system is really great.

Apart from ml to intercept traffic, a very simple yet effective scaling strategy comes from how Java hashmap actually works. You can set a 75% threshold and double (or any multiplier you want) your capacity once that threshold is reached. Start with 10 nodes - becomes 20 - becomes 40 - becomes 80 and so on so forth. You can also reduce the multiplier weight with each increase only slightly to not overwhelm your cost chart (a min weight needs to be set and weight reduction cannot go beyond that)

A little bit over provisioning when serving 2 million requests with an sla is better than being conservative.

At 37:27, not just the speed of computation, but also the egress cost of transferring all that unnecessary data over the wire to your server from database to perform reduce type computations which can simply be done on the database layer itself. And if you find yourself querying such data frequently, then you can have materialised views for it, making it even faster. Finally, if your use case doesn't require the most latest data and is fine with eventual consistency, then you can add a caching layer in front of it, making it blazing fast.

compliance in self hosting is easy compared to managed services and cloud. All you need to prove is encryption at rest and in transit and few network level audits. however, for multi country services, cloud is lot more easier and cheaper in terms of setup and compliance and auditing.

Zerodha doesn't have replicas and doesn't have slaves. All they have is a sorry when they server or db crashes. People lose money, and they think replicas are not important.
