Can this product be installed with a rain screen? (looks great and durable)
@FireflyTinyHomes9 күн бұрын
Yes! I would recommend something like Cor-A-Vent since this is vertical cladding. On Tiny homes we don't usually do it because the Zip has a bit of texture to it that allows the metal to not really hold water in tension and every inch of width comes from interior living space. Lot's of trade offs with tiny homes.

Finally, a tiny home builder explains roofs! 😁 Just like you, I've seen SO many done incorrectly, but nobody takes the time to clarify how to do it correctly. Well done! Oh, and collar ties can be up to 4ft apart. 👍

Build a flat roof. Cover it in EPDM membrane. More room, very strong. Zero overhang. There is no advantages to a sloped roof on a small dwelling. Yours truly: architect/builder.
@FireflyTinyHomes9 күн бұрын
This a fair point and we have done that. However aesthetics do have some value to clients and if they don't want a flat roof, then we figure they don't have to have it ;)
@lizzieb631111 күн бұрын
Very helpful. The only thing I recommend is that the potential new tiny home owner makes you aware if they live in a high wind zone area as shed style roofs are not always the best choice as they are vulnerable to extreme high wind uplift. Of course the slope of the roof plays a large factor there…but it’s something to consider. A gable roof with bracing at the ends (that can be made to appear decorative) might be a good option for high wind zones. I personally prefer a shed style roof for several reasons: suited well for installation of solar panels: ease of maintenance: I like the appearance and also prefer the interior space when lofts are used with the more headroom if the bed is oriented at the high side of the shed roof. Great food for thought! Thank you!

Windows are a trade-off between light, views, and thermal performance, and every client has different priorities. Most of our clients lean toward MORE windows ;)
@silvina62878 күн бұрын
@@FireflyTinyHomes Of course it always depends on what people prefer, where the house will be places and what is the purpose. For all time leaving, even in hot or cold weather I will still advice to keep the amount of windows low. Isolation, security, ease of c;eamomg. and place to hang up things. For a weekend gateway by the lake, then you would like more.

Entry doors should open out or all be sliding to give more usable space inside. You waste valuable floor space by swinging the door to the inside. IMO.

@Just-JakesАй бұрын
Aren't you worried about thermal bridging and condensation with that floor pan touching your structures floor?
@FireflyTinyHomesАй бұрын
Actually yes and no. First, Rockwool fills the cavities quite completely which will keep the floor pan warm to a certain extent and less likely to condense. Second, the floor is not at the same risk as a roof as far as vapor load and since the floor pan is not water tight, moisture can drain so the wood can dry. Finally, I neglected to mention that as a just in case measure, we adhere a strip of ice and water shield to the bottom of our joists. You can’t see it on the video but it is an easy to add safety measure. 👍 I’ll have to film a bit of that on the next build!
@Just-JakesАй бұрын
@FireflyTinyHomes Got it, thank you. Ice and water is a great idea. Have you thought about using foam board insulation or an air gap between the trailer deck and rockwool? Or even having the trailers built with the pan on the underside of the trailer? I recently started building my tiny home, and before the floor was in, I would often be greeted with a good deal of condensation on top of the pan on cool mornings. Luckily, I have a trailer that allows for foam board insulation under all floor framing, aside from where the bottom plates of the walls reside. Keep up the good work, it's nice to see builders who take pride in their work.

Sure! The board and batten comes from a local metal roofing/siding supplier. We use a couple different ones as they both stock slightly different metal colors. Our main go to is Best Buy Metals, which does have locations around our area of the country and beyond. The v-groove wood-look metal is Lux Architectural Products out of BC ( luxarpro.com/lux-lap-cladding-panel/ ) -- we've tried a few different wood look steel plank siding and this is our favorite, even though it's not supper easy to get.

Nice job and great material to use. What are the safety ratings for hurricane 🌀 and tornados 🌪
@FireflyTinyHomesАй бұрын
If damage from high winds is a concern, then metal siding and roofing is really the best option hands down. Because each piece interlocks and you can always double or triple the amount of screws in each panel, the wind rating can easily be up to 140 miles per hour. We treat our builds from the perspective of needing to easily withstand hurricanes and earthquakes (which is sort of what delivery amounts to ;)

@FireflyTinyHomesАй бұрын
The point of this particular design is to be an eye-catching blank slate. If you need storage, it can be added in so many ways. We have designs without an integrated porch with large wardrobe closet options if that's what a client needs. Everyone has a different mix of priorities and needs, and that leads to a lovely variety of creative tiny homes!

A guy had to do this set up. Where in the HELL do you put your clothes?
@FireflyTinyHomesАй бұрын
Hi. Thanks for watching the tour of a tiny home that my wife and designed and built together. While we designed this one based on feedback from clients who want a reasonably priced short-term rental, we still think there is room to add clothing storage solutions if someone wants to make it a long-term home. You could add a bed with drawers underneath. You could add a couch with drawers underneath. You could use a washer/dryer combo and hang clothes above it. You could use some of the tall utility cabinet for clothing storage... hope this helps :)

I'm interested in some of your flooring schemes. I have seen some nice floors in your units.
@FireflyTinyHomesАй бұрын
We'll talk about floors and the floor heat system in one of the next couple of videos! We've mostly settled on a selection of reasonably priced and readily available engineered hardwoods and we particularly like the bamboo varieties since the veneer layer is quite a bit thicker than the hickory or acacia that we've also used.

There are actually plugs that go beyond 50a. Pin and sleeve style plugs.
@FireflyTinyHomesАй бұрын
True, I do forget about those sometimes. I was under the impression that those were for temporary power only? Perhaps, I'm mistaken. Either way, the RV plugs are very common and for anything more, we just recommend a hardwired connection.
@MorberisАй бұрын
@@FireflyTinyHomes You would need to talk to the relevant inspection authorities for the area. They definitely are used for permanent installs here. I've seen many used for installing motors so that the motors can be disconnected for repair without requiring an electrician to come out.

What about the Tiny home builder who puts in an air exchanger?
@FireflyTinyHomesАй бұрын
Air exchangers are a very good idea and we offer them as an option on some of our models. However, they will not solve the need for a vented roof. You have to protect the roof sheathing with an insulation strategy of either spray foam or exterior insulation. I would expect a builder using an air exchanger to understand all that though ;) There are many great tiny home builders out there! We just happen to see a few high profile builders ignoring basic building standards.
