I'd assume I'm in identical woods as you being in permit area 169. When online scouting can you find these grass pockets easily or is it more boots on the ground? When hunting them is it an all day sit for you? Have you noticed a more success with larger grass pockets or smaller pockets? It makes sense, I always find the deer on the edges of the transitions as you describe.

I've seen this in mid October on days that were way too warm for much deer activity. In the last 2 hours before the squall line moves through big bucks on their feet with does that are feeding. Not really chasing but hanging around does and seemingly getting an "update" of sorts on the doe group. In my neck of the woods mature bucks really shouldn't be on their feet roaming outside of the laurel or greenbrier thickets mid afternoon but I've seen it before storm fronts.

I live in north central minnesota and have hunted the chippawa national forest for 40+ years...ln my opinion i think deer can sense a weather change is coming, so they are up feeding before laying up to wait out the weather...So with more deer (doe family groups) moving to feed, especially during the rut, it puts the bucks on the move looking for love, and the more bucks up and moving means more compitition...l love when that sleety rain turns into those little frozen balls, you just never know what might step out of the swamp...

November In northern woods of MN, rain/snow is fantastic time to hunt. Last year it happened again. While hunters went to the cabin or "bar" to stay dry LOL I spent the day watching a feeding area Between 10am and 2pm I saw 15 different deer. Usually, I only see a few deer there first hour or last hour of light normally. The funny thing was all of the deer left the feeding area by 3:30 just as the "I will tuff out the last hour" hunters entered the woods. I guess the deer were full..LOL Talking to hunters that night in town nobody saw anything "deer don't move during the rain" was the consensus. I dam near bit my tung clean through.

@@northernforestwhitetail I have experienced the same thing (northern Wisconsin)...deer and fish moving as the storm closes in. I do not think it's a buck strategy. I think during the rut up north (maybe not everywhere), the does control the movement of the bucks. I think ALL deer are moving more before a storm (and as the storm rolls through). Being near a hot doe in the northwoods is the single best way to be near the biggest buck in the area in my experience, storm or no storm. This is my opinion after 35 seasons of hunting the rut on public land in Bayfield county Wisconsin.
