Hi JD. Thanks for the supportive comment! I would be inclined to say that it will probably "work" (since it's a completely separate instance of the OS, but has access to the hardware ports), but I wouldn't advise doing so. The reason is that the interface is used for recording audio "on the go" - whereas the OS will be functioning on an external drive with much lower read/write speeds - so latency issues may crop up, defeating the purpose of the drive (unless its on a thunderbolt SSD itself - but that's getting into expensive territory). If you aren't dependent on Time Machine backups, my recommendation would be to try and format your Mac to the OS it came with, and use part of the process described above to load an older Mac OS version of the same HD as your original Mac. Read ahead only if you are fairly confident with your computer. Someone on YT has probably done this, but if not, the rough steps would be: a) Manually back-up your Mac (not using Time Machine) b) Follow Steps 1-3 in the video above to create a bootable installer for Mac OS Mojave. c) Restart with Shift + Option + Command + R that will install the version of macOS that came with your Mac. If your Mac is fairly new and you're happy with the OS, STOP here and you should be able to hopefully use your interface with this older version. If you need a version that's somewhere in between then d) Restart again using the option key like in 15:28 in the video and use the bootable installer to load Mojave on the original Macbook (not a separate external drive this time). All this being said, I haven't tried this - so please, please do proceed with caution, and do let me know how it goes!

Although it's impossible for me to test myself, based on your set-up I'd say go for it [just make sure to load the new OS on the correct one ;) ]. Once complete, you should be able to boot directly from the second SSD and should have access to all your ports (as well as your interface). Hi Madge. So sorry to hear you're having difficulty. It's a bit challenging to diagnose without the specifics - do you remember what the message was? The only things I can think of to double-check are 1) That the installation was performed on the Lives flash (17:34) 2) You are connected to the internet (16:12) 3) When you put in your Apple ID it might be trying to load some excess data from your iCloud drive if you have a lot on it (in which case you need to uncheck that option). These are guesses though as I don't know the exact situation - but I hope they help.

Hi Don. Sorry for the delayed reply. Unfortunately I don't have an M1 so cannot test and answer this. I'll be getting one in January and will try. However, a recent article from Macworld suggests it might not be possible "Sadly, the answer to this question is no.
