Love the abalone bird inlays and blue finish on the PRS! Playing is on point as usual Tag...

If you play through Stevie Ray Vaughan’s rig, you are still going to sound just as bad as you do in this clip. And if SRV plays through your rig, he is still going to sound like SRV. That’s what tone is in the fingers means. It does not mean your fingers can turn a clean fender into a cranked Marshall. Literally no one thinks that. Use your brain, man.
@HowlinTubesАй бұрын
This argument is and always has been a false dichotomy. Perceived tone is a result of every component along the signal chain, starting with the fingers and pick (or lack thereof) and ending with the listening position/setting. Some components will have a larger effect on the tone. The biggest three factors are the player (or "fingers', if you will), the amp+effects, and the listening position/setting. Of course, if you are listening to a recording, then the recording equipment and sound engineer become just as important. All other things being equal, if you butcher anyone of these key factors, the outcome will be poor tone or perhaps good tone that is vastly different than what is desired for the situation. Of course, the one factor completely under the players control is their own technique, and if you develop your playing, you will find that you sound good through more amps. Nonetheless, EVH playing Eruption on a tele through a stock Blackface Fender will not sound anything like the recording we hear on the radio!

This is a great video, Tag. Thanks for posting it. A well-done and very credible A/B-ing of the two guitars (and great playing, too). Can I ask what your signal chain was? And what model PRS?

I prefer the reissue, but they both sound good.

Depends who’s at the helm of the guitar though. Ritchie Blackmore playing that Child in Time solo on the 335 back in the day will always be better than some random guy noodling on a PRS imo

335,345 and 355 will always be my favorite Gibson guitars. In general I prefer playing PRS but, the tone of a semi hollow Gibson is beautiful.
@stevegardiner84732 ай бұрын
The Gibson sounds the way it's meant to sound. It's like comparing an Ernie Ball 'Luke' to a Les Paul. They both sound great, but totally different. You don't buy a Gretch if you want a guitar that sounds like an Ibanez Jem for example.

Tone is a simple thing that people keep trying to complicate.
@HowlinTubesАй бұрын
I believe I understand the sentiment you are expressing, but I disagree on the way you said it. Tone is an incredibly complicated thing, especially in the electric guitar world. I am speaking of the technical/scientific aspects of achieving a desired tone, but even the human listener emotional perception aspect of the equation is complicated. Fortunately, the player has very little control over all of this, and so in practice the complexities can be ignored. Develop your technique, choose appropriate gear for your style of playing, learn how to adjust the controls of the gear, play in a room of decent size and acoustic properties. Simple and done! And that is exactly what guitar players did before the internet filled our heads with an infinite stream of ideas.....

I have a one piece rosewood neck that has been real bright, I have always wondered why people say rosewood is warm while this neck I have is the brightest I have heard. Put in on whatever and it immediately brightens up. Now it all makes sense, the neck is perfectly quartersawn and doesn't care about string tension one bit.

Great stuff as always Tag! Tried to message you about something on TGP but your inbox is full. Is there a way I can give you a holler?

The real test would be have 3 different players that can actually play, then have all three play the same riff/music piece with the same gear. I can guarantee that its three different sounding pieces. It's the little nuances of how players use dynamics and touch in which we (people) describe often as tone is in the fingers. That's my take on it.

Could the tone/sound of the two amp be made more similar by adjusting the volume louder on the Columbia for some more grit, and quieter on the Bartell for less grit...and maybe some dialing in of the tone controls of the amps?
