At least the kids were at set when they should’ve been. They were too fidgety and talkative before they were called to it, though. Also, it genuinely depends on the age of the band. 6-8 year olds is… still pretty bad, but it’s kind of acceptable.

Can someone explain why this is so bad? I was in band a long time ago, but didn’t finish it because I personally hated it (also at that time, being in a band was a ticket to getting made fun of for the rest of the year, but I didn’t care about that)

What band director makes their students restart? For them to learn and grow you can't just publicly embarrass them. Encourage them to get better with positive feedback and energy. Shameful, honestly. Can confidently say my middle school band director would never.
