I feel like it's gonna be Boston. Soto looks up to and admires David Ortiz. Soto also wants to be the man and face of a franchise. If he stays with the Yankees, he will be second fiddle to Judge (until Judge retires) Soto seems to have an interest in teams future developments/farm system which the Red Sox have one of the best in MLB right now.

This is nonsense. Major league players should make these plays routinely. They simply cracked under pressure, and they did not have good enough fundamental skills to recover. They didn't just play like this in the World Series, they played like this all year. The Dodgers had the scouting report: The Yankees are fundamentally bad at defense and base running. The scouting report was right.

The thing everyone is going to remember about the defensive meltdown in the top of the fifth was Judge dropping the easy line drive. Then there was the throwing error at third base that failed to get the force out. So, bases loaded, no outs for the Dodgers. Cole has the weight of the world on his shoulders now and strikes out the next two batters in a gutsy performance. But here is where I think the real turning point of the game was. It wasn't Judge's line drive mishap, it wasn't the throwing error at third base, and as much as Cole pitched his heart out and should have won this game, in my opinion, the turning point was when Cole failed to cover first base on the ground ball hit to Rizzo. If Cole covered first, it probably would have been a close play because of Mookie's speed, but it's very likely that the Yankees would have gotten out of the inning, still with an intact 5-0 lead. Everything forgotten. Turning point of the game? Cole failing to cover first base. That's what I will always remember, more so than Judge dropping the fly ball. I realize it was a miscue between Cole and Rizzo, but a pitcher's first instinct should always be to cover first on any ground ball hit to the first base side. What do you guys think?
@SluggerSociety4 күн бұрын
Agreed Joey, Cole put the team on his back with that performance and then kind let them down too but man he was exhausted at that point. Love this breakdown and point point view. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
@commodoor65495 күн бұрын
You can certainly fault Cole for not covering first, but *Anthony Rizzo* was pretty nonchalant about charging the ball and getting to the bag himself. What you can say about the Yankees is that they were playing like it was a Spring Training game: mentally dull, physically rusty, and without enthusiasm, as if it wasn't a critical game. They had mentally already conceded the series. This isn't championship baseball.
@DeoAltius4 күн бұрын
I agree. They had no heart and no fire. It was sad to watch. They didn’t want it.

Lots of unnecessary BS analysis on Judge (took a peek at first base runner) and Volpe (poor throw, probably didn't have a good grip on ball) but Cole is a different matter. Look at highlights of Game 5 and you'll see Betts hitting almost the exact same cue shot up along first in the first inning. Cole starts over, then points at Rizzo, who was in position to make the play unassisted. But in the 5th inning, Cole thinks it's a repeat of the first inning and stops running to first, pointing at Rizzo, who now was deeper and needed to be careful fielding a spinning cap shot. No doubt the stress of the inning was playing tricks with Cole's brain, but there's no excuse for not covering the bag and if he had, the inning would have been over with no runs scored.
@SluggerSociety10 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Not BS analysis, it’s the science of what happened. Played should have definitely been made.
