No one uses a microphone on stage, they are always mic'd up up beforehand. So... the microphone is the gimmick. Perhaps the number is not said by the man but the mic says it though a speaker. Or perhaps the woman's voice was messed with. I'd say the man more likely since its only one number, and he is never consulted again. We never hear him say anything before or after the number. He doesn't make a big deal out of it because he is insta-stooged on stage.

8:40 I thought there was something very "Rebecca H." about this young lady. Not just in the aesthetics but in presentation. Bravo to P&T for allowing this mysterious British magician to continue sending over 10 out 10 smokeshows doing magic for our viewing pleasure.

The guy DEFINITELY did NOT say "47"... She muted the mic and had the number voice over. She told them "Not to react" when they said their number. Fraud...Fraud...Fraud!!!!

Well done Emily. I have recently purchased A.A.C.A.A.N. by Asi Wind. I believe you have used part of Asi’s method combined with some technology and great “volunteer” management!

I also could agree with people who say this is an instant stooge. If you tell an audience member to say a certain number, you made them an instant stooge. However, she does tell them not to react. No reacting is a big part of the illusion. It wouldn't work if they did react. So I do sort of think that once she says don't react, she is making both audience members instant stooges. I guess P&T don't consider instant stooges to be stooges.

There's been a few other instant stooge tricks over the years, so no it's definitely always been allowed. Instant stooging actually requires skill, on the other hand using an actual stooge is cheap and lame

The guy really gave it away. You could tell he didn't say 47 and he cocked his head a little when he heard it wasn't his voice. The long hair hid the woman's mouth from the camera, so you couldn't read her lips to see what she really said. But very clever design using technology... A magician on P&T said EVERY item they bring onto the stage is part of the trick, so you always need to keep that in mind and keep your mind open.

Such a heartbreaking episode to watch one of my favourite show fall prey to corporate sponsor's diktats. No wonder, Penn and Teller could not upload Season 10 episode 19 on youtube and instead "accidentally" uploaded episode 1.

Kind of surprised that this fooled Penn and Teller, because the fact that it was so simple and impossible made it obvious where the trick was done.

The FU segment is on this channel, but with comments turned off, why? Until I read it here, I didn’t know it was in anyway controversial or that Penn stopped to check with the producers that rules were obeyed. It was a nice trick, P&T didn’t guess how it was done, trophy well deserved - what’s the problem? Congratulations. FU is an excellent magic show and I think getting an FU trophy is always something special.

Comments on this are hilarious. Like the "difficulty" of a method is how you should judge an effect. People who know nothing about the performance of magic.

This trick followed all the rules of FU. No stooges and no preshows. When watching this live, Penn and Teller paused the show to consult with the producers to clarify the trick fell within the show rules. The mere fact that it fooled them and millions of other people proves that this was a brilliant piece of work that accomplished exactly what it was designed to do. Well done.

Totally violates the "rules" of FU. But 100% sticks to the script of pre-determined winners . Good TV is good TV after all. The fact that the only way Jilette can defend himself is by attacking the intelligence of other magicians is low-brow.

@kyleleon85 no the fact that it's something a 5 year old could do is what makes it lame. There's nothing magical about recording something and then playing it back. Takes absolutely no skill or practice to pull off.

@@damiencrews7603 no I’m not. I’m a magician and I believe this to be a valid method for stage and more specifically, this show. Not all methods are skill-based in the sense that they require a lot of dexterity and are difficult to execute. Effects that rely on mathematics or a principle rather than sleight of hand as the method are just as good and some would argue better, depending on the effect. When I comes to creating an effect and an impossible moment, anything goes. There are no rules to the method of choice. Only ego gets in the way of this.

You can see the guy volunteer wince, but try to compose himself because he wanted to abide by her request. That's pretty close to if not the definition of an instant stooge. A grey area if nothing else.
@JeffNipp
@JeffNipp 4 ай бұрын
She handled the volunteer very well by putting her hand up and immediately repeating the number. This discretely but clearly and firmly communicated exactly what he was expected to do. A subtle move that was deceptively important to the success of the trick, as was the placement of the microphone and the cadence of the question. For a trick that was kind of overly long, a whole lot happens in a very few seconds to ensure the stooge does what is needed.
