Just a pointer if you leave the bungs in all cases for draining it helps with the sudden burst of pressure when you drain the oils especially gear and transfer boxes then take out whilst draining. However make sure you break the bungs loose before as you don’t want no oil in cases if you can’t get bungs out 👍🏼👍🏼

Some gorilla tightened the sump plug on mine to the point I was afraid it was cross threaded. I bought an oil pump from Machine Mart with croc clips to connect to the battery. A thin tube goes down the dipstick tube and another goes into an empty oil container. Works great and gets 7 litres of oil out with no mess in just a couple of minutes. Works best with hot engine and filler cap off.

Regarding the oil for the transfer box on a TD5 Defender. The Haynes manual says "Castrol Syntrax 75W/90 (TD5 models)". However, Castrol has changed the name of that oil since 2022. It's now called "Castrol Transmax 75W-90". I've called Castrol and have spoken to their technical support to double check this. So. anyone looking for "Castrol Syntrax 75W/90" can replace it with "Castrol Transmax 75W-90"

The access for the diff on the Discovery 1 is terrible. And the selector mechanism is not sealed up as nicely as the Defender; the rest of the system is pretty much the same as in this video. Also, the rubber boot for the selector is riveted into place which means if you want to do some maintenance on it like in this video, you've got to come up with a way of getting it off and securing it back in place.

Place a large sandwich bag over the oil filter after loosing and before unscrewing it, it will catch the oil and the filter can drop in to it for maneuvering it out.

Joe, do you have any idea of the size of the copper crush washer on the gear box drain plug for the td5 like yours. I can't find the details.

I was shouting at the screen to stop you taking the motor in bits, you can reach all the mechanism from under the vehicle and pray with WD40 to get everything free then spray with lithium grease, the switch is often not the problem but again can be reached from under the car, its tight and fiddly but its better than taking the interior to bits, that would of been my last resort if spraying and working the mechanism didn't work, i did mine a while back, was a 10 minuet job.

Should add, I’ve just done all of this with only a few issues…mainly the rotor filter as the two 10mm bolts had nuts on the far side (someone’s Previousley stripped the threads), made it more tricky. The air box was a doddle but I suspect that’s because you have so many pointers I was careful to get it right first time 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Also my fuel filter didn’t have any wiring too it, maybe some heathen has removed in the past but it made all the easier to swap over

Could you confirm the size of the "star" tool for the level plug on the gear box, you say T10 but can that be correct? Seems much larger.
