DnD is not a DM vs. Player wargame, get into 40k if you want that. DnD is about telling a story and sometimes the dice don't tell an interesting one.

@TempSlothy who said anything about being about dm vs player? They don't want enemies to run away cause they are afraid of being targeted by them again and they usually don't know when they are punching above their weight class to be the ones running. I have had enemies trying to run and they got shot in the back or if they managed to run away they tracked them down and killed them, except animals they tend to leave animals alone if they attacked for hunger or to protect young/territory

@@jorge9604 I'm saying that having rolls never be fudged and having encounters just happen, you're kinda missing the point. DnD is not a combat game it's a story telling game that really really likes combat. Sometimes the dice don't tell a good story, the DM's job to use the dice to tell a story and player failure and success is much more interesting and fun than enemy failure and success in most situations. If the party is getting unluckly and just getting steam rolled by weak enemies my job isn't to go "touch luck" and let them die, it's to go "fuck this is not working" and let the dice roll a little more favorably.
@jorge96042 күн бұрын
@TempSlothy idc about how you do it it works for us and that's all I need. And is not always combat, every roll is in the open what happens happens. If you just want to tell a story then do it without dice when you introduce chance you also introduce the possibility of failure. If you can't handle the possibility of failing then don't play.

Everyone freaking out, the point of a game is to have fun, having an enemy completely whiff every shot can get boring and poses no threat to your players, therefore no challenge and boring. If your enemies absolutely decimate your players, that's not fun either. As a DM your job is to adjust your rolls so that your table is having fun, its funny to sometimes have an enemy whiff every shot l, under the right cicumstances even exhilirating, sometimes its necessary that an enemy is imposing and difficult, it depends on the situation. The Rule of Cool is what makes games enjoyable. Allowing creativity and employing deception to tell a story and provide an enjoyable experience, that is why not everyone should DM. Stick to the rules too much, and unless eveyones on the same page, it'll suck.

I've been weight lifting (very specific machines cause hypermoible joints lol) and it makes it so much easier to feel tired at night Adult stimulatory activities typically will give your brain the dopamine its seeking long enough to let you fall asleep (especially if you're adhd, it's likely getting lost in your dnd world is the brain seeking stimulation) It's not a permanent solution by ANY means, and long-term use would make insomnia worse after a while, but if you're able to safely use cannabis, it can also super help for once in a while. Same with melatonin Finally, changing what you're thinking about from logistics/ideas for the campaign into 'story about the npcs doing something unimportant but fun' can help remove that "oh shit I need to remember this tomorrow" feeling and can help keep your mind occupied long enough for your brain to fall asleep. Then you end up dreaming about d&d a lot but 🤷 Finally finally, always remember that laying down awake but trying to fall asleep has been PROVEN to rest you more than just being awake! Obv sleeping is best, but tossing and turning is better than nothing :)

It's not hypocritical to talk about things you'd like to see changed without changing them yourself. That being said writing and creating awareness absolutely is a way to change things. Authors that critique politics aren't necessariyl involved in politics on the side. It's okay to run a D&D game that challenges the status quo without starting a political campaign irl. That's gatekeeping.

Wow some of these comments. The whole point was wanting a table that was comfortable where a player’s trans character could come out as trans. That’s why “you need to quit your table” was the advice, with the unspoken “find a table that is comfortable with this storyline”. There was nothing there about trans trauma, not that I saw. Literally just “coming out.” A story of acceptance. If your table cannot handle that then… yeah, you need a new table. Not to imply that trans trauma is off the table. If the player, and the DM, and all the players want to and are comfortable exploring themes of trans trauma that is also allowed. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Sometimes games have more challenging themes and all the players are down for it. That’s where communication and ttrpg safety tools come in. But telling the story you want to tell is all about finding a table where you vibe. Which I’m pretty sure was the whole point of that previous short lol, so I have no idea why “don’t make the DM your therapist” is coming up…. Keep on bein dad of the year, it’s excellent to get these viewpoints out there, even if it’s hard 🎉

I think this person had a not-unreasonable point to make, but chose the most wrong thing to object. There are three things being conflated, and one of those statements came across as a universal statement when it doesn't seem like they meant it to? One idea is that a trans identity requires a complex, real-world discussion of gender identity and gender roles. Which, as you've stated, it doesn't. The second is that your real world emotional issues shouldn't come into a game. They object to this with universal language. My players use my game as therapy, and I encourage them to do so. I don't think that person would object to my game, as long as they don't have to be a player in it. To that end, very simply, "Unfortunately, it seems like the type of game I like to run may not be a good fit for you." Finally, they MAY be conflating being trans with being a political statement, and be of the opinion that "fiction shouldn't be political." I'm not sure they do mean this, but given that it's a common talking point: This is a rhetorical device, and it tends to be misguided. Most or all fiction is political. What they mean to say is "I want fiction that operates as escapism," which itself tends to be code for "I want fiction that doesn't challenge my worldview." That's not a problem, but it's worth noting that a trans person's identity shouldn't be involved in their worldview. There's also a universality in their language that I don't think they meant? My games are heavily entrenched in both real world ideologies (e.g libertarianism and corporate greed), and fantasy politics (e.g. what if Frankenstein's Monster was made by a corporate entity?). We have multiple safety tools in place, including a consent form and an explicit discussion of the themes during session zero. Again, I don't think the commenter would object to our game existing, as long as they weren't a player. Basically, hey, I get what they were trying to say. I just... disagree.

take a moment and think. so, if they're a "trans trender" and they're not actually trans, but they've done all this transitioning and are living their lives as if they're trans, does that bother you? what harm is it to you if you think they're mistaken, but they're fine. the other outcome is that they're actually trans and you'd have to treat them the same way anyway.

If you're doing a DnD where the setting is a medieval fantasy, I think it's reasonable to not want to include modern gender politcs into the world. That said, for just high fantasy or futuristic settings and people who just want to have fun, I over all agree with you. I don't play DnD anymore but recently I read a novel that was a brutal militaristic fantasy and it randomly dropped they/them pronouns, which pulled me out of the story. It made me wonder when the character had time during their daily life/death situations to contemplate their gender identity and how tf every character knows their preferred pronouns, but the author gave no further information at all. It didn't ruin the book but it frustrated me because it simply didn't fit the story and just felt forced. Just an example of why some people may not want a trans/nb character in a story based game, it can draw you out of the world and make the experience less emjoyable.
@NorasHobbyverse8 ай бұрын
Hi there, I'm not a politics, I'm a person. Hope this helps! I was homeless around the time I realized I was trans. We figure ourselves out any time, life or death time or just boring times! And we're sorry we don't fit narratives by being ourselves and wanting to see ourselves in media we create and consume. Try experiencing us more and maybe it won't be jarring when you see us.
@wr0te0ff688 ай бұрын
@@NorasHobbyverse Appreciate your response, I work with plenty of nb and trans people, I respect and like most of them. I've got plenty of experience with a shockingly diverse crowd of people. The reason my example was jarring was because of the setting, medieval time period and how it was approached in the story itself. Even the characters who are meant to be bad people respect the nb pronouns. The pace of the story is brutal, there is death daily and in a scenario like that, worrying about how you or others perceive your gender just doesn't fit. In My Opinion. If it had been explained at all, like giving the character back story then it likely wouldn't have been so jarring but the character feels out of place. Like the author wanted some brownie points. Again, just how I perceive it and how it may affect a DnD story in a similar manner. Gender identity is a very modern thing as historically have not had the down time or privilege to do anything but struggle to survive. Even being homeless in the modern era is likely better than how most people lived in Medieval times. I'm sorry for the long response. Like I said in my original post, if you're doing high fantasy or Sci fi esque campaigns or stories, trans characters make sense and can even add to the world.
@CricketChirpStudios8 ай бұрын
@@wr0te0ff68 Gender identity is a relatively new concept, but transgenderism isn't. I encourage you to skim the wikipedia article on transgender history. Speculative fiction generally serves one of two roles: What you're talking about is the type that aims to speculate on "What if our world, but...?" A lot of Hard science fiction and fantasy engages in that type of world. The second is focused on examining our current world through metaphor. Star Trek isn't trying to tell us what the world will be like in 150-1000 years, it's trying to examine Soviet Russia (DS9, TNG S6E10,E11), the rights of minorities and some of the ways to increase their protections (SNW S2E2), or the idea that racism... is bad, actually (TOS S3E15). Buffy the Vampire Slayer isn't asking about what happens if Vampires exist, its examining the process of growing up from teenage years to adulthood (vampires represent the impulses of adolescence, the Watcher's Council represents society's attempts to mold the impressionable youth, specifically as it applies to young women). The number one thing is that trans people just want to be represented. Within that context, they shouldn't need to clear the bar of being "historically accurate," because that's not really the point

I would hope that you use dnd to step a little outside of your comfort zone as that's what lets us grow as people. Find a group that fits with you. I've played games where everyone wanted to create an epic fantasy adventure with emotional weight. I've also been in groups where everyone seemed to have lied about their alignments because they all decided to be chaotic evil. Some players struggle with their character failing and become emotionally attached. Other characters struggle to take anything seriously. It's ok to play dnd your way.

That's why it's important for the DM to ask the group ahead of time what they expect when it comes to the amount of action/role-play. Most player I've met like a mixture of both but lean one way or the other. The key is to create opportunities for both in an appropriate amount for your group. Of course I'm not saying that the DM should drastically change their campaign. If the campaign doesn't seem like a good fit of a player, tell them that this might not be the right campaign for them. The same thing goes for if a group swings heavily towards action/roleplay. You don't want to spend weeks with a group only to find out that you're just not a good fit. It also let's the players know, that although they may really enjoy action/role-play, they need to make room for the other so everyone can enjoy the game. For example, my group is a mixture of people who are heavy action/role-play and people who like both, so the people who love action are having moments like casting enlarge/reduce on themselves so they can singlehandedly stop 4 giants from entering the room and those who love role-playing get to have moments like persuading the the tavernowner's kids to sneak food out of the kitchen so we can roast chestnuts over the snoring Dragonborn who keeps letting out puffs of fire while he's sleeping. Everyone is having fun.
