Chris, great instruction and very easy to learn! Your teaching method is clear and precise. I've been playing and finger picking guitar for over 40 years and thought I needed a new challenge, so I began learning traditional bluegrass banjo about three months ago. I've been learning this song (and about a dozen others) through my traditional bluegrass instructor who is older than me. He's a wonderful and well-known banjo player, but the way he teaches Boil the Cabbages Down, the song is stuffed full of hammers, slides and pull offs. It just never sounded a whole lot like the traditional version I'd heard so many bands play. So I took a listen to your video and realized that was how I wanted to play this song. Thanks to your great instruction, I was playing the song smoothly with just a couple hours practice. Such fun, Thanks. I'm looking forward to more of your videos.

Thank you for your comments. I have taught possibly hundreds of individual lessons. I have repeated the lessons over and over and I have found the most direct ways of getting people to play musical sounds on a banjo. Your comment made my day. Feel free to contact me directly if you wish.

I have my dad's early 60's Gibson banjo that I have wanted to play for years. I play guitar and play with my fingers and found the same technique works for guitar. These hints you outline got me inspired to pick up the banjo and get going.

Great plucky sound. Frailing or plucked in the bluegrass style is an exciting sound. Love open backs.

Durn! I really enjoyed that👍🏻 Speed isn't everything. That tempo really brings out the pleasure of the individual notes. Very nice.

Chris... Still playing with the Foggy Hogtown Boys? If so, will you be playing up around the Keswick area this summer? You've come a long way since Dawes Rd. Library as an ESL Teacher. I'm sure Jen would love to hear yous play again sometime as much as I would.

I know this is an old video but i subbed. My Dad played about every string instrument there is but the banjo was his favorite. Sadly he passed away 4 years ago. Now ive been trying to learn to play the banjo & this is really the only song i really want to learn bc it brings back so many good memories. I loved hearing my Dad play this, especially when i was a young kid. Id ask him to play it all the time. He started trying to teach me but we didnt have enough time. I pray i can learn it. Id be so happy😊 i know hed be smiling down, so proud of me.

I hope that you have been able to learn how to play boil the cabbage down. If your dad played, maybe some of that rubbed off. If you’d ever like to book a lesson with me, feel free to reach out. No pressure. Just for your information.

Just back from Wolfe Island Intensive bluegrass weekend, where Chris taught his banjo class this song! Just checking that I’m not inventing my own notes and still playing it the way Chris taught it 😘

Chris, when I put my ring finger down on the head the pinkie wants to stick straight out. Is that something that can be remedied?

Dear Tony, Picking hand position is subjective, and I really need to see the person’s hand in action in order to make any kind of suggestions. I realize that’s not a very satisfying answer. However, I would be pleased to watch you play and make some observations. Feel free to reach out if you’d like to meet online. Best always, Chris Quinn
