Truly wonderful. I sang this as a child with the words God Is Lovd but these exceeds that simple hymn. Stunning.

Of the Father's heart begotten, Ere the world from chaos rose, He is Alpha, from that Fountain All that is and hath been flows; He is Omega, of all things, Yet to come the mystic Close, Evermore and evermore. By His Word was all created He commanded and 'twas done; Earth and sky and boundless ocean, Universe of three in one, All that sees the moon's soft radiance, All that breathes beneath the sun, Evermore and evermore. He assumed this mortal body, Frail and feeble, doomed to die, That the race from dust created, Might not perish utterly, Which the dreadful Law had sentenced In the depths of hell to lie, Evermore and evermore. O how blest that wondrous birthday, When the Maid the curse retrieved, Brought to birth mankind's salvation By the Holy Ghost conceived, And the Babe, the world's Redeemer In her loving arms received, Evermore and evermore. This is He, whom seer and sibyl Sang in ages long gone by,; This is He of old revealed In the page of prophecy; Lo! He comes the promised Saviour; Let the world his praises cry! Evermore and evermore. Sing, ye heights of heaven, his praises; Angels and Archangels, sing! Wheresoe’er ye be, ye faithful, Let your joyous anthems ring, Every tongue his name confessing, Countless voices answering, Evermore and evermore.

They sang this in Augusta, Georgia in November 2022. Owain introduced it as one of the best pieces ever. I agree with Owain. I hope it's on their program for their US tour this winter. I want my daughter to hear it with me. She can lend me her hanky.

The acoustic of that Lady Chapel is more amazing than that of the cathedral itself! And what an amazing composer Lassus is! That piece is heading towards the style of Gesualdo himself! Like? No contest...LIKE!!! 😁😁😁😁

Bump the Playback Speed to 1.25x and that's closer to what the tempo should be. (Gardner specified quarter = 180)

This performance with just the six voices really does it for me. Byrd’s Ave Verum is the most beautiful of all the settings of this piece, in my opinion. His heartfelt longing for Catholic devotion in an environment where such devotion was potentially deadly just oozes from every note. Sublime!

Lovely singing. My only comment is that other versions (Kings College Cambridge) sing the version with the baby in the womb speaking to the tree - which is more magical and poetical.

Glenn Gould wrote this out by hand, each part on a fresh page, and planned to conduct it in studio with his six-part Wagner, a song by Liszt, and then ... no more notes. He died, and I still mourn the loss. Sleep well sweet friend, sleep well.

So sad that all the boys and girls choirs have been dismantled over the false notion that kids don't want to sing. Do a search on the Episcopal Cathedrals in the US almost none have kids involved with singing or even acolytes. Its an all adult show. The services have been watered down, so its a one person show. No need for competent singers or skilled acolytes. I see too much hogging of the lime light by certain church leaders. In the past the service was a team effort and came off stately and with grandeur. Now its too often a solo event or a variety hour, trying to get everyone's pet song in or make sure their social agenda is being validated.
