This happened on my M273 at 140,000 miles. Kept the vehicle until the transmission went at 254,000 miles. GREAT engine! 2007 GL450

The r230 was such a decline in quality . Having owned an r230 and r231 I can state that they are no where near the quality of my old r129

It’s amazing how smooth those 4.7 engines run, I’m a Ford truck guy but I really admire those toyo V8’s

So do old Chevy and Ford trucks with no timing chain swap. So does a 90s Honda Accord. Anything should go a half a million miles if you do the maintenance without major rebuild. I'm talking no pistons, rings, cams, lifters, valves, springs but only wear items like timing belts, rubber parts that rotted, whatnot. I have a 2008 Mazda 3, which is identical in every way but body panels to a Ford focus with over 260k on the clock. Drives and runs like a 80k mile car. Engine has never been cracked open. It will rust apart before that little zetec dies. And I'm not even a ford fan. That's just reality that if they don't last 300k plus there's something inherently wrong with there design

Watching those engines dangle from the chains in the air, as you both slowly navigate them into place, I see the sweat, I sense the nervous behavior of manhandling hundreds of thousands of dollars of someone else's machines. Stress level = ba-zillion. I still get the same way just changing a cabin filter in my wife's car. But you make it look easy, makes great content.

Have an 02 Tundra with 400k and a 225k 06 Prius. Prius on its last leg, been searching for an 04 4wd Sequoia for a while now, slow process, lotsa ragged out ones, but patient....BTW, it's 90k or 9 years for the mitsubOshi timing belt, so hope that one's been changed a few times, even with 80k.

AGAIN german from Hamburg here with a lot of experience with the M278. You have to get an M278 from April 2015+ some Models Like GLE/gls even at least juni 2016. Some problems stay also in these generations. Thermostat failure, stays open, plastic and sealing leak and brake, no big problem. Cost 300-750 labour. PLEASE NO EXCUSE change your oil with Filter every aroznd 4-6k Miles. 0-40 if long hauler often 5-40 you fine with Both for sure. DO IT great robust Engine but very define. Chain tensioners, cold start clicking, not your chain, its the tensioners which will lose power even if there is oil check valve installed. If so just renew with the tensioner the sealing of the Front cover which also leaks on newer engines. Build in oil stop wirings on your camshafts adjusters and camshafts sensors. Tank in the good oktane with clean engine formula to avoid to Cook your fuel injectors. Thats basicly is. Turbos in 98 of 100 cases totally fine After 100 of thousands.

These are hot engines and scoring can even happen on steel lined cylinders. Not so bad as before though. The main issue here is neglect in maintenance, especially preventive one and constant driving in traffic. Also folks doing dumb stuff such as flooring the car without warming up the engine result in such issues. I have seen pre 2015 M278 with 200k miles and just mild scoring & no engine codes or noise. By the way turbos were not at spec anymore by that time but can't really complain.

I've owned and worked on the M273 and M113K - I always swore the W211 E550 (M273) was the BEST all round daily i've ever owned... even compared to my nicer S600 and newer C63s... - The M273 is amazing - just needs to be well looked after - the M113 is more durable to being abused.

My M273 on w221 chassis made in May 2010 , it's bulletproof in Ten years of owning the car I had no trouble whatsoever, it has 433K kilometres, am very strict with maintenance, fully synthetic oil changed at 5000 but in recent years I started to change it at 3500 , I only changed the oil cooler at 200K ... Some hoses due to age and the secondary air Injection. For the PCV I changed it yearly for both the high load and the low load just in case. Now my Intake manifold arm broke I ordered new genuine pierburg for 600

Nice - the Pierburg intakes make a WORLD of difference. My 2006 E550 with the 273 never had the issue, but my wifes ML350 with the more problematic M272 - drove SO much nicer with the new intake - so you'll be suprised when its fixed I hope :)

Looking at a 2013 S550 with the 4.7 biturbo. Has 88K miles, looking at Carfax the first owner did 10-12K mile oil changes for the dorst 60K miles. Seems like a lot. Should I keep looking for a 2010-2011?

I got the extended warranty for 5 years. My idea is to let the shop rebuild the entire car for the next 5 years and then I'll have a decent car, LOL. I'm betting the original owner of your scored engine changed the oil every 10K miles.
