It seems like there was a deeper emotional level that could have been reached to identify what if any emotional yearning is at play here. The session really remains on a pretty surface level about his intellectual ideas of what he expects this next season will be like or what his appropriate role is, but not the why that is driving him to consider this. I wonder if identifying that emotional desire would have helped him move more quickly to the meat of his relationship with his parents. Because the action point he came to was not about asserting his need to clarify what the new relationship looks like, in my read it was about being in connection with his parents so that he can really move forward with emotional intelligence and curiosity about where everyone is at.

Love the way Lyssa coaches...the way she explores and different things that tries with the coachee (even the breathing...ok, it did not give him any insight, it's a road she tried...and I love that...)

Interesting and I am appreciative. I saw the connection about the legacy as the female or feminine part of the family. I guess as a coach I might have asked what does your son know about this legacy? Then again on the particulars of the mishap (or expectation being unmet) both mother and son may have been worn from teh day and not been their best selves.

This is awesome.. the coachee is profound himself, and the coach is on the another level with his intuitiveness and how he places his questions perfectly in the moment

This was amazing and really so helpful. I appreciate seeing in action so many skills I learned during my TRLC certification cohort. This master coach really guided this session and guided this client so beautifully by listening, NOT giving advice or answers but rather, guiding him to uncover his assets and capacity. She started with rapport and a bit of regulation (breathing) and, I have so many great AFQ's from this session. Thank you so much!

Thanks Janet! There is a halo effect around someone from the C suite, and it definitely intimidates me sometimes! When I think about the breadth of experience and wisdom that often comes from a no-nonsense high-level exec, it's another layer of consideration for sure!

I met Lei years ago at UCB and she was a complete visonary and standout! It is no surprise that she is excelling in the team coaching world. She empowers and elevates others to live into their 2.0 and beyond. This is a worthy watch for any professional who has thought about becoming a coach. Sharing her journey paves the path for more renegades and explorers who know what's possible through coaching and consistent investment in people and don't have 2-5 years to wait for a green light from above. Cheers, Lei!

What constitutes joy in the man's mind? What does it look like? What memories specifically bring to mind the emotional feelings of joy? What is the difference between a happy or positive event and joy? Is it possible to have joy in the midst of problems or things not going the way you planned? If so, how do you define and describe the difference between happiness and joy? And. . . . if that's the goal, feeling and experiencing joy during the day, what beliefs would have to change? ------- The coaching skipped all over the surface without exposing the true discontent in the heart of the man! Why? Why was the coach allowing the client to dance around the surface of a subject? The questions from my perspective were superficial in exploring the root cause and reason for the person's life. ------- The joy thing. . .as the man stated, is connected to the "reason why" . . . that was his quoted phrase. That's key. The coach didn't hear it. If I was to be an intuitive coach myself, which I am. . . the issue here is the man doesn't know why he is alive and questions his value in life. And, ending the day with a "joy journal" to see if he experienced it is not working. He needs to figure out why he is alive, what the purpose of life is, and what his specific calling or mission for living is. And, then with a vision for the "WHY" . . . he will have measurable target and reference to shoot for and live joyful in. Without knowing why you are alive and the purpose of your life, there is no joy! It's all "lost." Which is what the Bible calls those who don't know the Lord and the reason He made them. They are lost! That relationship with God needs to be restored. I cut to the chase, because its the truth. The "guilt" he was originally assigning to wasted time was the guilt of living a disconnected life apart from a relationship with His creator, the living Lord, Jesus Christ who loves Him and died for his sins so he could live accepted, loved, and guilt free! And in that relationship find joy and live with purpose, not having to measure up to the law and religious performance, but in response to the love of God that is freely given by faith. Hello. LOL How do I know this. It's the truth. And to quote Jesus from the bible: "The truth will set you free!" And. . He said, "If I set you free, you will be free indeed." Guilt, Shame, and feeling lost are real issue. The only solution is a born again, set free, new creation, alive in Christ, . . LIFE. Jesus said, "I came to give you life and life to the fullest!" Jesus rose from the dead! He's alive. And redeems people and sets them free from guilt, shame, and every identity issue. But they need to agree with God in order to walk into the light and receive the "joy" of the Lord and be Spiritually made new. They need to realize they are guilty and they need a savior. No one can come to God with religion or performance. None of us are perfect. And God is holy holy holy, perfect. We are fallen creatures, descendants of Adam and Eve. The solution is a spiritual one. There are only two kingdoms. The kingdom of God, which is light and full of joy and peace and purpose, being restored in relationship with Him. And Satan's kingdom of darkness, blind existence, pursuing superficial meaning and filling emotional needs by other people who also have half empty buckets and can never fill us. People need to be filled to overflowing by the Lord, falling in love with Him, finding their identity in Him. Finding the love that never rejects, and secures us as accepted born again children. We can't earn it and we can't lose it. It's not achieved by works or religions. Its recieved by faith in what Jesus did on the cross by paying for our sins and rising again to give us new life. Apart from Christ paying for our sin, and the willful acceptance of His payment for their sin, by believing what He actually did for them on the cross. . . . they can only bury the truth that they are guilty (not just feeling it) . . . without God, keep pursuing superficial life experiences that only end in emptiness and the feelings of something isn't right. Because it isn't! A joy journal will only be an empty book with superficial and fleeting experiences, without God. . .if life is lived without God. It's meaningless!

Not everyone is religious and they don't need to bee converted while they're being coached. It's a great strategy if they are religious, but if they're not, you're just doing more harm than good.

He doesn’t seem to have a need for this kind of coaching… I don’t think he needs someone to help him regulate his emotions or to be aware and discern how he feels about things, he seems to have his own working wisdom and intuition and organizational/relationship skills.

i would have asked Eric what would have happened if he really had the extra money to the trip, cause if feels that there is a scarcity based mentality behind the money holding him back to taking that trip. Probably, just probably is the stone in his shoe was "its too expensive, i dont wnat to spend that money right now, i ll do it in the future when my finances are stronger". End of the story. Most of people cant face those simple facts nowadays and make deeper excuses to justifify their thoughts or actions.
