Question for Kidneybean or other ? I am at the step that I just finish taking my measurement ( gap beetween cam and bucket- valves ) but by doing that I had to turn the crank ( with ratchet - flywheel side ) to get each lobs up on both cams ( Or TDC at each piston). I did that of course with the open valve cover and I feel a little loose on the chain every time I turned my rachet clockwise at a certain point of the cycle of piston ... Do you think that the gear in the crank stay at his place with the chain during this little loose ? My tensionner was still at his place during this operation but I still have a doubt cause I have seen in another video with this motor not to turn the crank if the valve cover is open... Is it something that happen to you and if yes , how can I double tcheck if the chain is at the right place with this gear (in the crank ) before that I close everything and start the engine . I want to be sure that I dont do a big mistake. It is my first time for that type of mechanical job. Thanks . Claude . Sorry for my english , I am a french guy from Quebec :)
@welderteach Жыл бұрын
I think I know what you mean. , make sure you installed the chain tensioner correctly and remember it is hydraulic. It needs engine oil pressure to make the chain tight. Make sure and check your timing marks. Double /Triple check everything. Hope this helps

@welderteach Жыл бұрын
It is a pretty big job, I never asked many questions about why it would need it early. I would bet a dealer would charge 10-12 hours plus any parts etc, so a total guess would be $12-1500.
@tarivard2 жыл бұрын
Is it possible for you to do a follow up to this showing how you did the math? I am trying to make sense of what you did here and it looks like you converted from imperial to metric but it also looks like you made some assumptions. I have 12,000 km on my ZR and want to do the valves this summer. It starts and runs fine but I find it is takes more cranking to start than my XF which has 3500 km on it.
@welderteach2 жыл бұрын
Well I didn’t realize the valve sims had their thickness etched onto them and that it was metric. And also, as things wear the valves get tighter, meaning you will need thinner shims. So knowing that, use metric feeler gauges and record your measurements, then subtract those measurements from the tolerances which the valve clearance is supposed to be(I found this info online).Record everything. Then subtract that number from the number etched into the corresponding valve shim and the answer should be the thickness of the shim you will need to have your valve clearance within spec. I did have 2 valves that were tighter then my thinnest feeler gauge, so I did assume the clearance was 0. After the cam is installed check the valve clearances again. You may need to repeat that whole process if your math was off but hopefully not. So re-check and triple check your measurements and math. Clear as mudd?
@tarivard2 жыл бұрын
@@welderteach I figured out the math after I wrote this. I think I have it sorted now. I will buy some metric gauges to do this job next summer. Engine runs and idles great but I know its time to do this. Thanks again for the vid.

Hello, I finally got around to doing this. I have the valve cover off and the smallest size feeler I have is .127mm and I can’t fit it into any of the exhaust buckets.. it’s crazy how much that has worn. What did you do to size it properly? I think you just figured it as zero, correct? Also how did you get to the cam chain adjuster. I have the motor mount bolts out and I have the motor pushed forward. But it is still tricky getting to that adjuster. Thanks for all your help!
@wesleyward6455 Жыл бұрын
I meant 0.04mm
@welderteach Жыл бұрын
@@wesleyward6455 I did assume mine were zero but my thinnest feeler gauge was 0.015 which is significantly thinner than your 0.04. I would see if you can borrow a set that goes thinner. I assumed zero because 0.015 is what the tolerance variance is and is just a coincidence that the tolerance was also my thinnest feeler gauge. To get the chain adjuster out I had to roll the motor forward or upright. I used a large piece of wood under the exhaust to hold it. Hope this helps

Why is there so much chain slack between your sprockets? This doesn't look right to me. It seems like if you had an upward force the timing chain could skip. Shouldn't the chain run nearly straight across the tops of the sprockets?
@welderteach2 жыл бұрын
The reason you have to take out the rear motor mounts and stand the engine upright is to remove the chain tensioner. With the chain tensioner removed there is quite a bit of slack in the chain. As soon as everything is set and tensioner re-installed the chain is tight again
@sweatequity71602 жыл бұрын

What a nightmare for the average joe. Prior to the valve adjustment, did you have some starting challenges? I have changed out my ISC and fuel pump relays to try to correct this on mine. I find that it takes a couple of attempts to get it started. Once running it's fine. I suspect that this valve adjustment may be required in the near future. I have 7200 km on my sled. One other challenge for me is that the dealer welded the nut on the end of the steering shaft as these are prone to getting loose and causing slack in the steering. Thanks for the vid.

It is a big job yes. My machine would start but only run a few seconds and then stall unless someone was giving it some throttle. And on deceleration it would stall unless you were giving it some gas. It never showed any trouble codes. So I never played with any electronics much. But the valve adjustment did fix it and it runs great to this day.

Mine has about 5500 miles on it and does the same thing at start up. It will often die when riding and u let off the throttle when coming to a stop. Everyone tells me it has to low of miles to need an adjustment. When yours also die when stopping sometimes
