@BearyFunny83
@BearyFunny83 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joanna! Not sure which part of pophealth you're up to, but the first module is definitely more application based, however pretty much all the modules afterwards are memory based. I think we I was preparing for the test, I just reviewed my notes, which mainly consisted of definitions, since there aren't any past papers to do. I think they still give you that ~20page document of notes for the first module right? If they do, you can definitely use that as your notes! Just make sure you really understand the concepts and the definitions of stuff. So for example, you have a lecture on Non-Random Error. Understand what that is, learn the types of non-random error and think of examples of what it is. In the test (and exam) for Module 1, it's all about applying the knowledge, so you need to know the knowledge well before you apply it. For module 2 and onwards, it's mainly just memorisation of things. So knowing the types of fertility rates used, or phases of demographic transition. Definitely don't take the workshop content foregranted either! For us, Age Standardisation and Ethnicity Coding were in the test. So go over the content and practice the questions that were provided in your tutorial. You can expect very similar questions in the test. Sorry that was really long! Maybe one day I'll actually be fast enough to have video responses to these questions, but hopefully this will still suffice! All the best with pophealth and your other papers this semester!

Hi, thanks so much for this video! I was wondering approximately how many hours you studied each day during biomed and were you always studying ahead or did you just keep pace with the lectures?
@BearyFunny83
@BearyFunny83 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jimin! I'm not sure exactly how many hours I studied each day, but if I finished lectures around 12pm. I would probably study for a few hours in the afternoon and evening, so maybe like 6?? There was definitely a lot of variation though, and just because I studied for a long time, doesn't mean I was always super productive. I wouldn't try set your study goals based off how many hours you've studied though. Instead, try see it as, "today I'll get through 2 lectures and then review this section". So that way your studying has a purpose and you can look back at what you've accomplished vs how much time you spent studying. Well my study style involves making notes and flashcards. I usually would try make the notes on the day or the day after the lecture, but actually learning my flashcards (how I remembered the content) could take ages. I think it's quite normal to fall behind with lectures, but you usually can catch up before any big tests. Some people would be like 10 lectures behind for the majority of the semester and still be fine on the test day, but I think for me I tried to stay fairly on top of it all. Hope that helps! :)

Anatomy: Acland's Anatomy (If at UoA you can get it for free), 3D4Medical (Usually has big discounts), Human BioDigital (Free alternative to 3D4Medical) You Tube Channels: Anatomy Zone, Armando Hasudunga, Crash Course, Osmosis I wasn't a huge fan of textbooks and didn't use them much, but the ones recommended are Principles of Anatomy and Physiology by Gerard J. About 280 nowadays. My class (graduated 2017) was about 250. There is always a shortage hence the increase in numbers. The majority (150ish) is from 1st year entry. There may be 40+ from postgrad entry, 30+ from MAPAS and 20+ from rural. Every year will be different

Hi Anna! Very good question and I'm thinking I'd like to video on ways I study! I personally don't use an iPad, but I know quite a few people who buy them for studying and love them. It really does depend on your studying style though, since a lot of people are fine with typing on their laptops or writing in their course guides. I guess to keep it short, if you already own other Apple devices and want to write stuff digitally, go with an iPad. If you're more of a Windows person, then you should consider a Surface.

KylaTheKiwi Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it! I was just wondering if course guides are always given for each course? Because I hate how for the ppts you can’t really annotate your notes so I feel like I would use the iPad for that purpose, but If there are course guides and handouts for anatomy then I wouldn’t mind writing things out. Thanks again Kyla!
@BearyFunny83
@BearyFunny83 5 жыл бұрын
@@sugariiesw33t No problem! Yep there's a course guide for every paper, however how useful the course guide is, does vary. Some lecturers will provide printouts of all their slides, others notes, and some literally nothing. Most of them will upload their slides online, but they might not be in the course guide. Most of the lecturers that teach anatomy either provide slide printouts or black and white diagrams for you to colour in/annotate throughout the lecture. If you like annotating all the slides, a safe way would be doing it digitally as that ensures all your annotations are in the same place. I probably can't show you what's in our course guides due to copyright, but hopefully my explanation helps!

@BearyFunny83
@BearyFunny83 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Poppy! I don't know any UCAT books, but I guess my recommendation would just to first look at the free resources already given on the UCAT website. I know they have a guide and a large bank of questions for all the different sections. They also have an app you can download on your phone to practice while you're on the go! These will be the best resources as they're literally from the people who make up the exam. I think doing these questions is the best thing you can do. Even if you don't get them right, read the answers and understand the way the questions were solved, so you can apply that knowledge in other practice questions. Only if you burn through all the practice questions they supply and you still feel unprepared would I look into other sources. All the best! :)

Hi Kyla 👋 was wondering .. for labs .. is it usually group work based ? And are the tutors nice ? If you were struggling with something, are they approachable and understanding or do they have this expectation that because you’re in med school .. “you should be smart enough to know” ..
@BearyFunny83

Hmm, well I guess it depends on the type of lab you're in! All the labs I've had, have been at least partner based, but some may also be in a small group. All the tutors are super nice and they are there to help! I've never really experienced anyone judge me for not knowing something. After all, you're there to learn! They're all students just further in their studies, so they've been through the lab in the past and know what it's like. I have friends who have been tutors, and they actually like it when students ask them questions. Otherwise they're just standing there doing nothing. Hopefully that helps! :D

Hi Poppy! I did INTBUS151G which was really chill paper (40% online quizzes, 60% exam). Unfortunately from my understanding, if you're doing biomed, you have to do your gened in Semester 1 now. INTBUS151G and other papers my friends did, were only offered in Semester 2. :( If you're looking for an "easy" paper, I'd recommend taking PHIL105G. Tons of people do that one so it'll be easy to find someone to go over stuff together. You pick your gened when you've properly been enrolled into your degree and you get to pick your timetable. Hope that helps! Again, that's just from my perspective and experience, but if there's a different gened you're interested in, or someone recommends a different one, don't let my opinion stop you from taking it! :D

Hi thanks for this video, it was really great and you two seem really nice :) I just have a question about rank scores when applying for Auckland uni... do they take your external grades from year 12 (I am a year 12 in high school right now) when calculating your rank score? And if not then do you know how they calculate it? Xx
@BearyFunny83
@BearyFunny83 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Terewai, glad you enjoyed the video! :D Well the rank score is determined by all the level 3 standards you've taken, not level 2. So in year 13, once NZQA releases the results, UoA will start sending out offers as they'll be able to see if you've met the requirements (such as meeting the rank score). You can calculate it yourself or go to this website that calculates your current rank score. It's useful to see if you've already reached it, or figuring out how well you need to do in externals to reach it. Hopefully that helps! www.rankscorecalculator.auckland.ac.nz/

@BearyFunny83
@BearyFunny83 5 жыл бұрын
The medicine programme structure is quite different where we don’t really have 4 papers per semester. We mainly have different topics that are spread out over the whole year or are done one after another. For instance, we cover 5 systems of the body in second year which are musculoskeletal, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular and genitourinary. We spent around 6 weeks on musculoskeletal, had a test and then started digestive. The same process occurs for the rest of those modules. On top of the science-orientated modules, we also have modules that focus on our professional and clinical skills, where its content is scattered throughout the year. Based off my own experience so far, I think I found the respiratory module the hardest. I think that’s because it’s very physiology heavy where you can’t necessarily see what’s going on. This makes some of the questions they ask us difficult to answer. (Also being sick didn’t help me during our study leave!) Everyone would find different modules harder than others though and I think they all have their pros and cons!
