Greek Cypriots weren't exercising the law so turkey had to step in to enforce it. That's how the current situation came to be. There are many instances around the world where borders are agreed upon as long as long as agreeing parties uphold the law and human rights. Greek Cypriots violated this and so turkey had to intervene and implement a hard border. It would still be one entity if Greek Cypriots hadn't broken previously agreed terms.
@TerryLefteri2 ай бұрын
Fallacious argument. Turkeys responsibility is to ensure the territorial integrity, sovereignty and constitutional order of the Republic of Cyprus. Turkey invaded twice, ethnically cleansed and transferred its own population Turkish settler colonialists who now out number the Turkish Cypriot Community.

There’s no such thing as southern Nicosia or southern cyprus. There is no such thing as Greek side or Turkish side. It is Cyprus and Occupied Cyprus; Nicosia and Occupied Nicosia. Also that is no border, it is an ongoing dispute, a ceasefire line that has existed for 50 years.

@AaqeАй бұрын
Unfortunately the Greeks "invited" the Turks to invade with their internal disputes. The stupid Greeks (I am one of them) got what they asked for. Turkey of course exploited the situation and caused a tragedy for the island that will live for ever. Let us hope that it does not get worse.

What ? Who are you ..?.. Brow, Since you are on the island , at least learn few things. On the island, for the last 50 years, we have a Turkey's OCCUPATION at the north part of the island. The south part, is the FREE side of the Cyprus Republic. Turkey, Invaded, and since 1974, is half almost occupies the island. Kicked out the local population, been replaced them till on our days,mainly by Turks,settlers from its mainland. Ignoring of all of the UN resolutions about peace and justice for the island, is even trying today to turn of those occupied areas, as a separate recognise Turkish state. All this situation, is very similar of what is happening today against Ukraine, by the Russians. Will you go visit Crimea, in a few years, and ignoring the facts, ..you gonna support the Russians OCCUPIERS ? I'm asking you now .?

Hey mate! I am not sure what spurred this comment because not once did I say I supported Turkey or anyone. I was very clear in both my video and subsequent comments that I was a short term tourist and as such it's the local's opinions that count. My 10 days in Cyprus certainly weren't enough to unravel what sounds like 50 years of frustration and hurt from both sides. It sounds like you are a Cypriot though - so what I want to say to you is that your country is beautiful, the people I met there were so friendly, and I really hope I can visit again one day! :)

@@Ingigogo your report was fair, but the only point I'd correct is that the break away state that has been declared by the Turkish occupied north is only recognised by Turkey (actually a puppet regime). Yes 100%, at the very least functionally it is operating like two different countries even if it's not recognised as such by most of the international community. It does seem a bit complex to me though because at least from what I read it was stated that most Cypriots want it be unified and feel there just needs to be a solution that's agreeable to both sides. However I was just a tourist who was only there for 2 weeks; so I feel like I cannot and should not have a fully formed opinion based on such a brief visit. I would love to hear from Cypriots as to their perspectives.

It's not a border. It is a checkpoint, as you are crossing ceasefire lines with a UN buffer zone in the middle.
@Ingigogo7 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment. It's a little confusing to me as it is referred to as both a border and a checkpoint in different media releases issued by the UN for example. Not to mention the terms border and checkpoint aren't mutually exclusive, you can have a border checkpoint as well. I suppose at the end of the day the semantics may depend on ones opinion on the situation in Cyprus?
@hazalcakmak35972 ай бұрын
It is a border bc it's technically two different countries. It being secured by the UN doesn't have to do with it not being a border. The UN is there bc of the wars that happened in the past
@TerryLefteri2 ай бұрын
@@hazalcakmak3597 There are binding United Nations Security Council resolutions (541 and 550) they state that the UDI was legally invalid and requested that no other sovereign state should recognise the declaration and asked for its withdrawal. Yes, the UN observe the ceasefire and ensure the fire doesn’t restart - It’s a ceasefire, the war technically never ended, and a political resolution must be sought to end the war, that has been in a perpetual state of ceasefire.
