Compact? For the 1940s, yes. But contrast that to gear used today by radio hams such as the QCX-mini and QMX from QRP-Labs. They offer everything these suitcase radios offer and more, but fit easily into the palm of a hand.

My dad and I used to buy new crystals to slightly go off channel as a kind of privacy cheat code. We would only tell trusted friends but within a couple of months people would catch on and start modding thier radios to have a less crowded channel and sometimes it got worse than the original 😂

That's great it was good fun trying to hide we used to use numbers and go to the frequency that the number responded to

Thanks for the video. I was an AM breaker in West London in the late seventies before being licensed as G6ELF in 1981. I was inspired more by the Dukes of Hazzard than Convoy. We used 14 rather than 19 as the breaking channel down south. Back in those days, the older Hams looked down on CBers, but the number getting licenced and moving from 11m to 2m was phenomenal! Anyone remember the ‘CB Song’ being banned by the BBC! The chorus was “breaker 1-4, breaker 1-4, come on good buddy for sure, for sure. I’m a rig runner like my mate Ron, let’s stack the eights, I’m down and gone!”😂🤣

Cooidea makes another one but smaller matchbox sized with a button on the side. I see both on Amazon. Not sure if the tiny one has ground loop prevention like this one boasts.

Thanks for the video. I went with a list of components and got nothing. I miss JabDog and Bowood for components. I did come away with six random FT243 xtals for the holders to solder in some G QRP club xtals, a piece of copper stripboard and a 12 Volt vibrator which I tried today and is working so I might make it up and use it externally to power things with H.T. from a 12 Volt battery. He even gave me free two packs of ferrite beads on wires. I might get a spare vibrator if he's at the next rally. G4GHB.
