You can gain about 1/2 db in power by making a full wave antenna. 18 feet on each side. You could use wire nuts to connect the wires. Fill them with rubber cement or vaseline for water proofing.

Your connections arent very good, the wire is a bit corroded. Clean up the wires and join with solder if you can. Did you measure the SWR, it seems your radio can do that. If possible, try half wave length of wire, or even full wave (11meters or so) for better radiation...

I was there 2005-2006 and mentally and physically abused daily. I ran from the place and got away. I would talk to the other boys there that would cry themselves to sleep at night and tell them not to believe the abuse. The bruises will heal and there parents still love them. I remember one boy cried himself to sleep at night , every night because they convinced him he would never see home again and his parents hated him and only believed what the elders would tell them so he better listen and do everything they said

The fence is not serving as a ground. A proper earth ground (even if you wanted to ground an antenna) must, by NEC code, be connected to the AC mains ground rod. Even a true ground rod (which there shouldn't be a 2nd one anyway) pounded into the ground won't do anything to help an antenna...and is actually making the antenna an unintentional lightning rod. If struck even nearby, it would run to wherever the wire is connected and fry it. You were correct when you mentioned a counterpoise, which should be several feet long and not connected to any ground but should be connected to the shield of the SDR receiver. Counterpoises mostly affects transmitters on the HF bands where they need a good SWR match. Receivers are much more forgiving. In your cases you simply completed the other side of the antenna as you mentioned (as in a dipole). By the way, the mistakes people make about grounds goes back to the old radio days when they didn't have the third prong on the AC plug. Fun fact - All modern ham transmitting equipment has this, so it is a misnomer to think a separate ground rod should be installed outside a shack. In fact, connecting gear to it is one of the most dangerous things one can do. Enjoy the SDRPlay. I have one just hanging out in my junkbox, and they can be great for their sensitivity.

It's not making it a lightning rod. That's ridiculous. If he wasn't using power from the mains, then he wouldn't have to connect it to the AC mains ground rod. A battery powered receiver can benefit from the fence acting as it's own independent ground. You must think crystal radio kits are works of evil. Fun fact! Not all modern ham transmitting equipment has a third prong on an AC plug. Because a lot of it doesn't even require AC mains power. Nevermind that there are still AC to DC power supplies still widely being manufactured with only two AC prongs. Nevermind that certain ones may be isolating transformers.

@@news_internationale2035 It's basic physics 101: if a rig is connected to a ground rod, when there is a nearby lightning strike to ground, it is only common sense that energy can be brought back into the shack via the "ground wire". Any wire from shack to ground rod adds resistance, it is never a perfect bond. The NEC code states that all equipment is to be bonded to the ONE ground rod, otherwise a potential is set up between the two. Why do you think you don't have to drive a separate ground rod into the ground when you buy a refrigerator? Because the third wire goes to the MAINS ground in the electrical mains panel, which is connected to the SINGLE ground rod. Why on earth do you think a two-way radio is any different from a refrigerator? It's not. I live in FL, and people have had nearby lightning strikes FRY their TV and small electronics. Why? Because some of the energy from the strike isn't fully dissipated to ground. It depends on your soil conductivity anyway. The reason ham radios have that ground lug on them is a throwback to a by-gone era before the third wire on the AC cord was even a thing. It's not necessary any longer. de Scott N1IA

I'm going with variometer. Variometers have the coils aligned like this. It's basically 3 coils wired in series. As you rotate the knob, the 3 coils align giving max induction and as they are rotated away from alignment, the inductance decreases. The typical variocoupler will have the inner ball/coil mounted at roughly 45 degrees to the walls of the outer coil, and the shaft also at an angle, but not always. A variocoupler is a variable **transformer** rather than inductor. You can rewire a variometer to act as a variocoupler, but it's not as effective.

Man, thank you for your kindness and compliment! I was so embarrassed to watch this video after all these years.. but I think at the heart of my bumbling fool of a self is the light of the spirit.. something we both understand.. and we are all animals and you are probably much much smarter than I. Some time before I made this video I had a spiritually transformative experience and experientially understood everything was one. I spent so much time after trying to express this. My life during this time was a constant series of little miracles and blessings. I worked mucking stalls at a horse farm and my life was simple and beautiful. The experience will never leave me. The Infinite Light that is greater than this world is Love and I truly believe that, and it can save us from ourselves.

@FoxyLobo
@FoxyLobo Жыл бұрын
I had the same idea but it won’t work well, it’s path to ground is too long, it will become part of the antenna, and it might also have RFI present.. you might be able to ground to a steel part of the building that goes to ground though with more success.

@FoxyLobo
@FoxyLobo Жыл бұрын
Well, it depends on the ionosphere but there’s a good chance of getting at least several hundred miles on a good day.. with 40 watts carrier, you can get an AM signal to Europe from east coast of the USA.. the signal will be better with SSB (narrower bandwith = more power concentrated in less khz). of course even with SSB, CB radios have a carrier of at most 12 watts, I believe. Normally on AM it’s 4w carrier power (at least, that is legal limit? Correct me if wrong on this).. anyway, it is possible to go thousands of miles with AM at 4w but it will be a very weak signal, maybe not even usable. More likely is several hundred using skywave. I hear people from California in Costa Rica, but they can’t hear me (maybe in part because my modulation is not working). Edit: your antenna factors a lot into this, as an example could make a v-beam antenna and achieve a more directional radiation pattern :)

@FoxyLobo
@FoxyLobo Жыл бұрын
Good to know - this coax is quite old.. I am increasingly becoming a fan of SMA cable for low power projects, but I don't think it's really constructed for the outdoors here.. To receive signals I use a separate dipole hooked up to an SDRplay RSPdx software defined radio, which is hooked up to my laptop running SDRplay software. You can also get a spectrum analyzer plugin and other things for the software. It's really what got me into shortwave DX'ing!
