Yes, it’s great to start learning! There is only a physical text book, but I translated a simplified digital version that displays the difference with regular Riichi rules. It is on the sign up sheet if you’re interested!

at 3:44 I don't understand why discarding 8 pin first over 9 would be the better than 9 before 8. It seems like terminals are less useful in general. Unless it's a matter of defense, where terminals (AFAIK) are safer.
@RiichiMahjongCentral
@RiichiMahjongCentral 8 ай бұрын
Hi there! Yes, in general, if you’re going to discard a weaker block, you would be discarding the more dangerous tiles first, unless you can benefit from drawing another non terminal tile (aim for Tanyao etc). In this case, since it’s not Tanyao, discarding the 8Pin first is slightly better for now. All discards are case by case for sure though!

My Japanese parents always instructed me to discard first when executing a pon-chii to ensure you don't forget to discard, which is the most common mistake by amateur mahjong players resulting in an illegal hand. It makes sense, however, to discard last in a tournament or pro game setting. I enjoyed the video, very informative!

In the second example, what is the idea behind keeping 89s over 13s? 13s has opportunity to improve to a ryanmen if 4s is drawn even though it loses chanta. Thanks in advance!

@RiichiMahjongCentral
@RiichiMahjongCentral Жыл бұрын
You have 3 pairs and 1 of them can be used as a Shuntsu. If you compare the 13S, it is a Kanchan wait. The other block is a 89S, and already double sided. If you will be dropping either one, I think you would keep the double sided 89S right?

My initial response to the hand would be to discard a 9-pin since we have a pair of 7-man already, and there is a not unreasonable chance of drawing a pair of 2/3/5/6-sou if we end up with a third 7-man or a 5/8-man to "finish" that block. Then assuming we got the 7-sou draw, discarding the second 9-pin would still leave quite a range tiles available to get to 1-shanten, while also keeping the option for tanyao or even consider trying for ittsu if a 1 or 8-sou was subsequently drawn (discarding the 2 and 3-man).

Of course now I go and watch part 2 and discover that is exactly what is suggested hahaha. Good to know my instinct was correct here. Although I always forget about sanshoku when building hands so that was a good reminder

Kanzen Sakizuke is kind of hard for me to understand. Is it that calling for something which would otherwise be considered yakuhai will not count?
@RiichiMahjongCentral
@RiichiMahjongCentral Жыл бұрын
Kanzen Sakizuke means that the first set of tiles you call Pon/Chi/Kan has to be related to your winning hand/Yaku. Also you can't do Kata Agari. For example, if you are tenpai without Riichi, and you have a Hatsu and 1 Pin pair, and can only win on Hatsu to make a Yaku, that is called Kata Agari. Another example would be waiting on 6 Man and 9 Man, and 9 Man would make your hand Ittsuu. If you have Pinfu as well, you can win with that, but you can't win just with Ittsuu unless you solidify a Yaku when you win. It's an older rule, and most places I've seen and been to don't use it anymore as they use the Ari-Ari rule. Hope that helps!
@Crockist
@Crockist Жыл бұрын
@@RiichiMahjongCentral I think I understand, just one quick clarifying question: So, say I have 3 Hatsu in a concealed hand for a yakuhai and that's my only yaku. If I call chi in order to complete my hand faster, would that make my hand invalid under Kanzen Sakizuke because that chi had nothing to do with the Hatsu?
@RiichiMahjongCentral

If the Hatsu is concealed, then it’s ok!
