Otto fought to keep Daemon from the throne because he was an unstable nut, only to find out that his grandson Aegon II was also an unstable nut. He became the very same danger that Otto saw in Daemon. Every political battle he won, every compromise he made, just to make Aegon II the new king, he realizes now that it was all for naught. He just placed a less experienced version of Daemon on the throne.

It doesn't get any better for Aegon going forward. Even without the injuries, history of Westeros will not remember him kindly and the common consensus between Westerossi historians is that he and Rhaenrya were just as bad as each other. The difference is that we get to see Aegon's dark side first, where as Rhaenyra's darkness is just to come.

@@RRed19 Otto grew "lax" (kind of) in his years serving the aged Jahaerys and the "weak" Viserys. He must thought those accounts on the Targaryens were exaggerated or "a thing of the past", and was expecting Aegon to be a meek puppet for him to use, just like the two previous kings whom Otto had experience with. *BOY, did Otto mess up there!* Maybe had he been more involved with his grandson, he might have noticed he wouldn't turn out like that.

This entire interaction was so funny. Otto, after starting this entire thing, is realizing that in fact Aegon is clinically stupid and incapable of using logic to win a war. Aegon was actually right about everything, despite the writer's best efforts to make us hate him. Ser Aryk actually came really close to killing Rhaenyra. He happened to get spotted by Mysaria and his brother happened to walk in on him literal seconds before he killed her. Lucky for Rhaenyra, but Aegon was very close to ending the war at the price of 1 life. The ratchatchers were a clear security breach in a time of war after the young heir to the throne was brutally slain by one of them. But more than that, Aegon was right about the smallfolk as well. He wanted to give back the guy's sheep. He wanted to not stave the populace, which happened, so they don't revolt, which happened. On that note, Aegon wanted to burn down the blockade, which he was advised against, for no apparent reason. He was also right about Harrenhall. Left unchecked, Daemon managed to raise an army and add the Riverlands to Rhaenyra's supporters. Daemon needed to be dealt with. The only time Aegon did what he wanted was when he named Larys to the Small Council. And now that same man has saved his life and remained loyal while all others betrayed him. Everyone in that family is constantly undermining and disrespecting the person who they put on the throne despite him not wanting it. Aegon's biggest failure is not believing in himself enough and listening to lesser men (and women).

@@vahagnmkhitaryan9909 no I meant really he should have been there for each and every child born in his family, starting with Alicent. Rhaenyra was flawed, but the one job she did flawlessly was bringing up her children. I think he should have taken a page out of her book. Remember how Alicent couldn't even hug Aegon when he was sobbing for his child? That's a learned behavior. Aemond goes to a brothel just to feel some semblance of maternal comfort, or whatever tf he wants. Otto was a flawless hand. I imagine, in performing his duty to the realm and furthering the future of his house, he didn't calculate just how important his duty to his own family was in terms of executing his strategy and plans.

I think this is Otto's greatest flaw. His entire time spent as hand was with him basically having full control over the governance of the realm. For the last 2 years of the aged king Jaehaerys' reign. And the soft and malleable King Viserys who often left ruling to his council. So he anticipated Aegon would follow in this path. But no, he wants to be his own man and pursue his own path and not listen to scheming geezers like Otto.
