I never introduced Dremel to my dog and she has no reaction to it, we do our "pedicure" outside. Inside she lets me to do on her absolutely nothing. outside everything. And I don't have to feed her with her treats for that, she gets them anytime anyways.

I agree with her method of slow intro and conditioning the dogs respons. The dremel must be seen as a positive thing, something they like bc it will get them the treat. I have a 10 pound aggressive Chiweenee who has never been hit or stressed as part of disapline so he has no fear. Thru conditioning and manipulating his response to the grinder he now knows if he allows me to trim nails he gets his snack. Im saying he takes bribes and feels safe taking this bribe bc hes never been hit or manhandled. Nowdays when I pull out the grinder and snacks he gets in position for nail trimming. He knows the drill. He thinks he is running things. One tip is, as you intro the tool or begin trimming stop as soon as he resists. Let it go. If he associates the tool with pain and you being mean you will never get him to accept the tool. It takes months.

I will try that out! I tried introducing it slowly like you did but didn't think about turning it on and just letting the body of the device touch them 😊 I changed to a dremel as my dog is really uncomfortable with the clippers no matter how long we tried to introduce it and since I cut too deep once, she is very scared about it and I don't wanna use clippers ever again kn her 😅

Good, sympathetic advice. Dremels used wrongly can traumatise dogs. 'Little and often' is key - fast overuse can make claws hot and sore and scare dogs - nails are very sensitive near the quick.

Super helpful video! Wasn’t sure how to get my dog comfortable with the dremel and this will be a great aid. Thanks! Do you do this process with your dog each time you cut their nails? (I’d assume it’d go quicker the more comfortable they were ofc)

I might have missed this. But is there a reason why your chose to do this session on his bed? Or he just happened to be there, so you brought it to him? Just curious.. as I have a 4 yr old German shepherd that I rescued. Who does not like the drimmel. She doesn't like water. So bathing is not fun either. Any tips on getting her use to water for baths? But I do find this video very helpful. That is why I am asking why his bed? So I know if I should do the same. Or if it doesn't matter.

Not a dog trainer but a dog owner! My dog loves water but used to hate baths. 1)Choose wherever you will be doing baths from here on out, a bathtub, a place outside, a self-serve wash (we use this one) 2) Begin by taking your dog to the area, not too far that they are stressed/uncomfortable. If your dog doesn't like the bathtub, start from the bathroom itself. If that's too much, start from the door. Give them a treats for good behavior. 3) Start introducing water. Do a little bit at the beginning, running in the background. Don't touch them with it, don't get it near them or anything, just allow them to be in the presence of the water. 4) Slowly work your way closer to whatever area you need until they are comfortable standing on it (bathtub, grass patch, etc) and are okay with the water. 5) Slowly introduce them to the water on them, I did this by gently pouring water from a cup onto her sides (where she is least sensitive). Same routine, short sessions until your dog can feel comfortable in the water! Keep in mind that each dog is an individual who may come with their own preferences. Some dogs with LOVE bath time. Some dogs (mine) don't hate it but tolerate it instead. All you can do is your best to keep your dog as happy and comfortable as you can!

My dog is petrified of nail clippers and now she’s petrified of the electric nail grinder thing I haven’t even got a chance to get anywhere near her paws with it because she’s 70 pounds of muscle and she’s not having none of that even if I try to pin her down she start spazzing out as soon as I turn it on I don’t know how to fix her or if she’s even fixable but her nails are getting long she has no problem giving me her paw she’s not even afraid of the grinder I think she had a bad experience when she was a puppy cuz i was looking through my camera roll and noticed I once clipped her nails too short and she bled a bit sometimes she’ll be laying there and I’ll touch her nails and say snip and she gets excited and will even put her teeth on my hand so I won’t hurt her I’m worried she can’t be fixed and her nails are gonna get too long and she will have health problems from having really long nails

It would be worth trying something else for now like teaching her how to use a scratch board (or sometimes called nail board). It's essentially a hard surface with sandpaper and you teach your dog to swipe at it which grinds away their nails. You can definitely work on the dremel at a VERY VERY slow pace, but I would try an alternate method to get some progress a bit faster.

Great video I too made the same mistake when introducting my dog Ruby to the nail grinder. You are 100% you definitely gotta take it slow and make it fun. I personally would never use a dremel grinder on a dog. Especially ones with super fuzzy paws. Dremels do not have the safety gearing that will stop if your dogs fur gets caught up in it. I personally like the Oyster grinder you can buy up at wal mart. Works awesome and it does have that safety gearing.
