Can anyone explain why there is often an engine attack to the rear of the train. Seems a lot of weight for no particular reason.

The Mark 4 carriages are operated in push/pull configuration. The locomotive either pulls the train, or pushes it. When pushing it the train, ,the driver sits in the Driving Van Trailer (DVT) at the 'front' of the train with the locomotive at the back of the train. The DVT does not have an engine in it, - it is just used to control the locomotive at the back.

Reopening this railway line would cut down on 1) Pollution, 2) Car Accidents, 3) Road Deaths & 4) Traffic Jams.

Good to see Robert. I wonder if this means that the line is going to be retained in a mothballed state beyond this year's tenth anniversary of its closure? Let's hope so!

We'll have to wait and see, plans for expansion in Rosslare but it may be too late for the railway.

Great shots Robert. The line along Wexford Quay always had a uniquely magical appeal....but it's not quite the same as it was in the days of the wooden works when you could lean out of the train window and almost touch the fishing boats! Thanks for posting.

Some great shots of the lovely South Wexford line and surrounding countryside. Such a shame that Iarnrod Éireann and the Irish government have dumped this strategically valuable railway that could carry so much freight and so many passengers to and from the largest port in the country in terms of traffic tonnage. Wonderful video of a beautiful line and a priceless national asset that's about to be thrown away.....such a shame that it's likely to be ripped-up next year. Think of the thousands of lorries that rumble along inadequate roads to and from Rosslare Harbour every year - and how much of that freight traffic could have been transferred to the two railways serving the port, with just a little political will and imagination. Perhaps the people of South Wexford and the wider population of Ireland should get up a petition to the government to have the line reopened to both passenger and freight traffic. Belmond Grand Hibernian is a luxury train service in Ireland, operated by Belmond using Irish Rail locomotives and drivers. These dark blue carriages are that train.

@@tomfitzpatrick7335 Passenger services ceased in 2010 and Irish Rail have to maintain it for 10 years after this...however there appears to be no interest in reopening the line and there are plans to turn it into a greenway.
