Thank you, that's a very informative video and helps me with the purchase decision. As an older birder, carrying the 100-400 around all day is heavy enough -- even with a chest harness. Extra weight would reduce my enjoyment. I also really like the 100-400 and use the macro capabilities quite a bit. It's a pass on the larger lens!

Thanks very much for this! I wish I'd had this video when I first bought my P900! I've just now set up the camera as you suggested, except for Metering; that option was initially available to me, but after making some changes, is now greyed out. Any suggestions for what I might need to do to get it back so I can adjust it? In any case, I look forward to trying out the new settings! Thanks!!
@StephenIngraham21 сағат бұрын
Generally when a setting is gray out it is because it conflicts with another setting you already have on…not sure what is going on.

This is a very interesting video. I believe you are spot on about the reason people use micro 4/3. I have that lens on my Sony 7v4 that camera body is primarily for video work only but I got a good deal on the lens and pick it up. In my opinion for this old 68-year-old there is no way I can shoot nearly as well with the Sony in the field, the only way I can do it is if I use a tripod. The 100 to 400 works very well with the 1X body. The balance is just perfect; on the OM-1 it is still not bad. So in a nutshell, even though the bodies are about the same size between the micro 4/3 and the Sony; I have to bring a tripod to shoot the Sony system just too big and heavy for myself
@StephenIngraham10 күн бұрын
I have the Tamron 50-400 on my Sony a6700. It is almost exactly the same size and weight as the OM 100-400.

I agree that we went ro MFT for weight and cost. But try getting 300-1200 at this quality in FF. Agreed its a lot of lens. But when you need one it's more than viable - and about 1/4 of the cost of the big-white.
@StephenIngraham28 күн бұрын
Yes it you need that kind of reach, and can carry the weight, it is a good deal. However, if OM Systems had developed a 150-600 specifically designed for M4/3, instead of adapting an existing full frame lens, it could have been considerably lighter and more manageable. That is my disapointemnt.

Everything so expensive. Maybe a 6100 with that lens?
@StephenIngrahamАй бұрын
My whole reason for switching was the AI subject recognition and eye tracking auto focus. The 6100 does not have that. Look at a used 6700 and used Sony E 70-350 for a less expensive option.

Funds limit my explorations… :) I have had the Explorer for only a day now, but already I can say that it is going to be my daily listen! Wonderfully musical and enjoyable.
@MyMomSayNoDotaАй бұрын
in your opinion, how should we listen to music? is it according to how to the artist intended to or how engineers of these iems want to? does this iem do the former or letter? while you explaining the vast different taste of human to music at the end of this video, my mind think, what is the true sound of music? if u catch my drift.. sorry for asking in this old video. im looking for my successor to tangzu wan'er. so happy with it and hesitate to find for it's successor because don't want to be disappointed in the tuning. im just looking for 'high definition of wan'er' version.
@StephenIngrahamАй бұрын
Either the ZiiGaat Cinno or the Aful Explorer would be a definite upgrade…and not break the bank. The Explorer is smoother and slightly more refined, but cost twice as much…both are on sale right now. The Explorer is going for less than $100 US. :)
@StephenIngrahamАй бұрын
And I did not answer the first part of your question. You have a long chain between instrument or voice and your ears. There is the artist’s intent, then the recording engineer, then whoever engineered your dac and iems, and finally your individual ears. Ultimately the music is not music until it reaches your ears, so it does not good to go back along the chain. Enjoy what you hear. :)

Is there any chance you could make a video explaining meta tuning? I've never heard the term before
@StephenIngrahamАй бұрын
If you search for it on youtube there are a few attempts already…and I am not the one to really explain it as I am not a numbers guy. Basically it is refinement of the Harmon curve with less bass boost, more mid-bass, a fairly flat midrange, less pina gain, and a flatter treble. Overall, to my year, and assuming my samples are typical, it sounds very coherent with a strong bass and everything else in good balance. The guy whose work inspired the term says it is just another way of saying neutral or flat…but takes into account more closely the actual structure of the ear and how it interacts with sound. :)

What improvements over the OM 1 have you noticed? Like you I’m more interested in portability. I am unsure of upgrading within the 4/3 system. I like nature, wildlife, landscape and some macro. I feel that the IQ of the om-1 is good in good light. Focus often seems good at the time, but later on the computer, it seems out of focus or less sharp. I thought the computational features would be more useful to me, but it’s turning out to not be the case. Thanks for these great videos. They keep a hobbyist like me well grounded. And that’s needed!!
@StephenIngrahamАй бұрын
There is more “depth” to the images. Part due to the sensor and part due to the Tamron lens which is excellent. There is more and finer detail even in heavily cropped images. And I find that the Sony js just easier for me to work with in the field. I can set it up to do what I want without fuss or bother.
