I just finished building one of my own design. Yours is much more compact and mechanically straightforward, but I discovered the same trapdoor trick. I hooked the trapdoors up to an observer clock that can turn off with a switch from my AFK platform, (not that there's really a need to turn it off but it's a cool feature,) and I pass the drops through a filter that removes the banners and spits them out on a cactus to dispose of them. Just for fun I put a redstone lamp fill meter on the stack of output chests so I can check the progress in freecam without leaving my AFK platform.

you should have given overall required blocks to make it for us to replicate (if you can give some estimate that would be nice of you) , anyways great farm, thinking of building this same but high up in sky over my base with the fall kill mechanism rather than the lava one (I want iron raining on my base lol)

I built it, but the villgers wont go back to bed after the first time they did, they just stand together in the one block - is there an issue or do i need to reset the farm?

This only works on vanilla servers. On paper servers, this only works when the owner of the server sets *allow-tripwire-disarming-exploits* to true which is set to false by default.
