Started listening, started comparing with Karajan's recording. Very different. Maybe i'll prefer Karajan in this case because that unwordly music seems more unwordly via Karajan's etherial opulence. Great to know to be able to keep listening to both with enjoyment, if i'll keep living for a while. Any more suggestions of great recordings of the Metamorphoses?

Die Vögel hocken still in ihren Zweigen. Ewig… ewig…

The final paragraph of Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot always rings in my head at the last pages of Der Abschied: "The Cosmos extends, for all practical purposes, forever. After a brief sedentary hiatus, we are resuming our ancient nomadic way of life. Our remote descendants, safely arrayed on many worlds through the Solar System and beyond, will be unified by their common heritage, by their regard for their home planet, and by the knowledge that, whatever other life may be, the only humans in all the Universe come from Earth. They will gaze up and strain to find the blue dot in their skies. They will love it no less for its obscurity and fragility. They will marvel at how vulnerable the repository of all our potential once was, how perilous our infancy, how humble our beginnings, how many rivers we had to cross before we found our way."

Truly one of the most outstandingly brilliant Composers to grace this Earth. Furthermore, let me extend my undying Gratitude to another Great Composer, Frank Zappa, who turned me on to Varése early in Our friendship. In fact, Varése’s influence on Zappa’s music is quite evident extending to some of His early Compositions. Zappa’s last Masterpiece, Civilization Phase III, is in essence, a Gracious Bow and Nod to the Great Composer. All of Varese’s Compositions will surely be studied and analyzed for eons to come as well as those of His Greatest Admirer, and student “Frank Zappa”. Thank you Mr Edgar Varese for your invaluable contribution to the World of Music.

@16:42 the texture here... the acerbic bass, the slightly harsh/shrill/biting winds. @17:03 the low Db-D in the bass multiple times (and A-Bb), until finally it resolves to a longer held Eb @17:17

The first section and its subsequent repetitions are ridiculously fast. Even the virtuosity of the Berliners cannot overcome the hysteria of this performance. Was Rattle trying to show that Mahler anticipated Shostakovich's more manic moments? Mahler doesn't need that sales pitch--or is Rattle trying to demonstrate that he knows better than Mahler? The contrasting slow sections are better played, but the whole movement sounds sloppy, which is the last word I would ordinarily apply to the Berlin Philharmonic players.
