Before considering even a move there much less buying property, visit first. The infrastructure is lacking -- the sewage system is so poor that you can often smell it on the street, where some of it spills onto, called "aquas negras." And if you're in a condo, you can often smell the same thing in the laundry room or maid's quarters from the drains. Furthermore, things have become a lot more expensive, sometimes equally as expensive as the US, so it's not such a great bargain anymore. It's also incredibly hot and humid most of the year and it rains almost daily, though it only lasts 10-20 minutes. Yes,, there. are the highlands like Boquete, which has wonderful weather, but it has become crazy expensive because of so many expats -- in fact, you are likely to hear more English being spoken than Spanish in Boquete. As for buying property, it's always difficult to sell once you've bought should you wish to -- and Panama does NOT have the same stringent building codes as the US. There is lots of very poor construction, which is visible in even new buildings with cracks in the concrete and other issues. I was there for three months from October to January this and last year as I considered a move there, I was born in the former Canal Zone, so I know the country well. I have my cedula, so I don't need any special documents to move there. Still, I suggest you beware of all the propaganda being pushed by people interested mostly in getting hold of your money and instead dig deep before making an investment as significant as real estate. Oh, and I am perfectly fluent in Spanish, so no language barrier involved. It's just not paradise as some would want you to believe.

For expats, there are good jobs when looking at Multinational companies... most Panamanian companies will pay much lower salaries than you would be used to coming from N. America.

It is affordable in few areas you would want to live. Gringo prices are in effect. Of course if you already have lots of $$$ then it is affordable. SS is not going to cut it. I lived there, beautiful country, being sold off to the Chinese.

Overall, an effective and meaningful presentation. You avoided hackneyed words like "iconic" or "holy grail." Plus, you were able to move directly into your pros and cons without hyperbole. May have been helpful if you mentioned where you lived and some idea as to rents/purchases. Thanks, Ted in SoCal.

Would love to move there but the regulations are stacked against importing a classic car there. Like Ecuador, they don't mind special interest cars sold new, but try to bring one in, and it's like the end of the world. Funny thing is having a big family (over 2 kids) will result in far more pollution and there are no fees to discourage that.

My husband and I spent 8 months in Panama (March 2024-December 2024). While it wasn't the country for my husband and I, we had a lovely experience living there. I am a Spanish teacher and have lived in several Latin American countries, Spain and England. We are off to Eastern Europe at the beginning of 2025.

The State Department issued a Travel Advisory in September advising Increased Caution in this country due to "increased crime and potential for civil unrest." Here is a portion of the advisory: "Crime occurs in Panama, including theft and residential break-ins. Crimes of opportunity such as pickpocketing and purse snatching can happen in tourist areas. The Embassy receives occasional reports of residential break-ins, especially during the holiday season. Demonstrations periodically occur due to local issues and have disrupted some normal travel patterns in the past, including the flow of goods and services to some parts of the country." The advisory also designated two regions as " Do not travel" due to criminal activity including drug and human trafficking.

Thank you for this video, it's the first of your videos I've seen. My wife and I have three countries we are considering becoming expats in, and Panama was #1 on our list. Something I don't see being talked about any longer in the news, and that I haven't seen mentioned in KZbin retirement videos, is the water shortage going on in Panama. Many people don't realize the water Panama uses for the locks in the Panama Canal is fresh water, which is the same fresh water that supplies drinking water there. This fresh water source has been drying up due to the drought conditions in this region of the world (Southwestern US down to Ecuador), and there were ships waiting weeks to get through the canal instead of their normal transit times to deliver goods. Has there been any talk about this there in Panama? Ecuador has been in rolling blackouts for many months now due to the water shortage, and they just reversed their decision to stop blackouts over the Holiday Season. They are now cutting major businesses / corporations power for a 15 day period to ease the strain on their grid. Their power is Hydroelectric, so water shortages are huge there.
