Great video! But judging by some of the comments, there seems to be a bit of confusion about how resection (or triangulation) actually works. To clarify-this method only works if you can identify two or three known landmarks (three is ideal). The key step that's missing here is that you're taking a bearing from those landmarks using a compass and transferring those bearings to your map. You're not pulling bearings off the map itself. Ditch the base-plate compass and buy a decent sighting compass (Suunto MC2 is the best). Base-plate compasses are not accurate at long distances when taking a bearing. Also, while small buildings were used in the example, it's much more common to use prominent geographical features like mountain peaks, hilltops, or other distinct terrain features. Of course, this only works if you can recognize those landmarks. If you're in a new area and aren't familiar with the terrain, you'll need to do a bit of detective work-comparing what you see around you to the topographic features on your map and making an educated guess. One important tip that often gets overlooked in navigation videos: regularly orient your map to the terrain while moving. Take a moment to align your map with the actual landscape, verify your location, and identify key features. This habit keeps you aware of your surroundings and makes resection (or any map work) much easier when you need it. Hope that helps clarify things!
