Great documentary, I still remember listening to the last race finish while sitting in a warm mineral pool in the evening here in N Z. Thanks to the aussies winning, it inspired our country to become involved in 'The Cup' and the rest is, for better or worse history. It's a shame there aren't aren't any Aussies involved at present , perhaps they will again in the future, another reason to hold future defenses back here in N Z. That's presuming that we can defend it again which I think will be very difficult this year. It's all going to become clear in September/October this year.

A bunch of fuckwits all round. It’s ridiculous how much money the NZ governments have put into a boat race over the years. At the time of this I was a teenager and probably bought into it, as it was thrashed in the news and in our schools. I went to the victory parade in Auckland when NZ finally won it in 1995 and it was a wild party for sure. But reflecting on it all now, a bunch of rich white guys on both sides, racing their little boats, coked out of their brains. Yeah nah.

As great a sailor Gary Jobson is it is amazing how lousy a commentator he is at the same time. I just rewatched the 1987 Cup from Fremantle on Australian TV and the commentary was ten times better than this.

This was a stupid race course; the reach legs only produce parades, whereas a pure windward-leward race course induces contact and action. I am glad they got rid of it eventually. The crew work of il morro was astonishingly poor.

I get why the Scuba Cam was dangerous to the diver, but I’m surprised we haven’t seen anyone experiment with remote-controlled cameras on the marker buoys themselves in more recent editions.

My take, for what it's worth, is that Dennis largely outsailed Bertrand -- even in races where Liberty lost. Dennis lost to a faster, new design that had already rendered his Liberty obsolete. Congrats to the Aussies, whom I supported in Newport that summer, but the victory is undercut by the lingering and strong suspicion that Ben lexcen had Dutch help in the design process. If true, Australia should rightly have been disqualified. And now, unfortunately, the America's Cup has descended into this awful spectacle of screaming wind machines foiling around at 40 knots. This "sailing" is unrecognizable to a sizable portion of the sailing cognoscenti.

Koch is what's wrong with the cup. The money and attitude but a vapid personality.
