Faetopia Festival was a pop-up queer arts, ecology, theater, and community center that opened in June of 2012. For the week before San Francisco Pride, over a hundred artists and collaborators created a visionary space for the queer community in the long-vacant Tower Records, next to Cafe Flore at Market St & Noe St (2286 Market St, to be exact). During the day, Faetopia hosted workshops, meditation, teach-ins, heart circles, erotic playshops, and more. Most daytime events were free. At night, the arts reigned supreme with theater, burlesque, live music, queer cinema, and, of course, plenty of drag. Most nighttime events had a $10 suggested donation, but no one was turned away due to lack of funds. This vibrant event was hosted by Comfort & Joy, an organization deeply rooted in the Radical Faerie movement. Comfort & Joy was founded by Kitten Calfee, whose vision was inspired by Harry Hay’s teachings. Harry Hay was influenced by the Two-Spirit traditions of Native American cultures, which teach that being gay is an asset, not a liability. Hay learned from these traditions that being queer is a gift that informs one’s expertise, allowing queer individuals to make significant, positive contributions to society in colorful and meaningful ways. He recognized that non-native gay people were suffering from the impact of homophobic bigotry and needed to learn from these native teachings. Inspired by Harry Hay’s teachings, Kitten Calfee spent many years developing the Comfort & Joy art collective, aiming to merge the philosophies of the Radical Faerie and Burning Man movements. Larry Harvey, the founder of Burning Man, established 10 Principles that include Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, and Radical Self-expression, creating a framework for a vibrant, participatory culture. These principles encourage individuals to engage deeply with their community, and contribute creatively to projects that benefit the public at large. The principles of Radical Inclusion and Radical Self-expression resonate strongly with the values of the Radical Faerie movement, as both emphasize the importance of welcoming all individuals and celebrating unique identities. Faetopia was a testament to this integrated vision, bringing together hundreds of creative collaborators to create a space for artistic and spiritual exploration. The event fostered a colorful and inclusive community, much like the culture seen at Burning Man. The Faetopia Festival demonstrated the power of community-driven initiatives to create spaces where individuals can thrive and express their true selves. Comfort & Joy continues to embody this vision today, creating colorful special events in San Francisco where queer people can explore their identities and connect with others in meaningful ways. Wow! That is terrible! I feel bad for recommending Sonder to you. My experience with them has been excellent. I stayed in that same location you are in (in the last room to the right of that front desk), and it was great. It even had a little private garden! I also stayed in New Orleanns for a month (an amazing loft), in Barcelona for a week, in Detroit for a month, etc. I have booked both fully apartments and rooms like the one you are in now. The app-based customer service worked great for me but, from what you relate, actually in person customer service may be locality-dependent. I trust you alerted Sonder corporate that the fokls at the CDMX Tonala location are not doing a good job! I hope they see this video and refund you!! Sorry it my recommendation did not pan out as I expected.

Hi I would like to inquire about the shortest trip possible from Europe to America (preferably New York), as I would like to travel to America within two months. I never want to get on a plane. I will go from Jordan to a European country (according to your answer) and then travel by ship to America. How can you help me and what is the shortest and most suitable trip? I have a fear of planes so I have to travel by ship. Thank you so much

At the time this was originally recorded I skated at Mineola Skating Rink and Phil was our organist. I met my husband Don there and we skated to Phil's music. When Phil saw us, he'd play a medly of I'm in the Mood for Love and Deep Purple ... the songs we always asked for. We married the year the rink closed and got away from skating for 23 years. Always kept our skates, though. Five kids later, we started skating again and in 1988 actually bought the local roller rink in PA. Amazingly, we were quite successful for 26 years. During those years our favorite rink organist has been Marty Dumic of Mechanicsburg, PA. We sold our rink, the SKATERY in 2014 and eventually retired to Florida. Don passed away nearly 4 years ago, ending the Rink romance of two centuries! If it weren't for Mineola Skating Rink and Phil Reed, I wonder what our lives might have been like???

Roberta! Thank you so much for this touching story. I am Phil's grandson and I will share this with his only surviving child: my mother who lives in Fort Myers, Florida. She will be so thrilled to hear this story. You may have even skated with her 70+ years ago. If you would like I can put you in touch with her. I'm sure she'd be delighted to hear from you. - David (in Ashland, OR)

My dad got his first Hammond about this time and began playing in the Sharon, Pennsylvania area. Hammond organ music surely has changed and so did dad. He ended his playing on the cruse ships out of San Francisco in the 1980s. He also played at Swirl Arena in Hermitage, Pennsylvania for roller skating.

I spent a week, searching through a collection that he had lent his photographs to years previous, searching for his. His insight on the photos that weren’t his, and the stories he told of the ones that were his, will remain with me. As will the quiet praise of the few photos of mine that I shared with him. And I will treasure the signed works he sent me after that week of interaction, as a sly, sideways glance of affirmation of my work. Thank you Arthur.
