Thank you for recommending The Egg Race. Made in a very different time but it is worth a watch for the drawings of the teams designs and the unintentional innuendo.

Don’t believe you’ve done it… but one of the most underrated shows ever has to be Star Stories on Channel 4. Silly but incredibly funny takes on celebrities. The David Beckham and Tom Cruise episodes are some of the funniest things ever put to screen. (At least in my memory)

Major Les Hiddins is a retired Vietnam Veteran who worked with the aboriginal community to learn about the foods he talks about in the show, including the Kakadu Plum which he introduced to the wider world which has recorded concentrations of vitamin C of 2300-3150 mg/100 g wet weight and occasionally as high as 5300 mg/100 g, compared with 50 mg/100 g for oranges, making it among the highest known of any natural source.

The theme to Gurney Slade became popular as part of the incidental music used on, 'Vision On', back in the 60's and 70's. This and a number of others take me back to a time long ago. I was never a fan of Rapido. A bit after my time in regard to the popular cultural references. Never heard of the others. One of the worst shows I ever remember watching was a Doctor Who spin-off, (that luckily only lasted the one pilot episode, but was repeated almost a year later, for some reason during the Christmas periods of 1981 and 1982), called, 'K9 and Company.' It starred Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, and the robot dog the show was named after. The premise of the show was a kind of mystery solving exercise, but what could have been solved in less than 10 minutes was drawn out to fill in about 50 minutes. The worst part was the theme tune. Probably devised in 5 minutes on the back of a cigarette packet, no less.

Looks like I did this incorrectly the last time, so let's have another crack at it! Don't know if you've covered these as I'm new here, but in case not: Excellent: Garth Marenghi's Dark Place. Weird dark comedy show, hosted by the titular character, Garth Marenghi, a fictional auther who penned the show. So it's a sci-fi/horror show within a show, if you follow. One of Matt Berry's first acting roles iirc. Forgotten & probably rubbish for most people: Beast, a comedy set in a vets staring Alexander Armstrong. I quite liked it, but I fear I'm in the minority!

...I wonder if "Gurney Slade" might of been a possible inspiration for "Mr Bean"...? Re Green. Good stuff. The local PBS station used to air it on Saturday nights along with "Red Dwarf", and "Doctor Who".

The Bush Tucker Man was a great show. Prior to that we had an excellent groundbreaking TV Show Called "In the Wild with Harry Butler (1976-1981) on ABC TV here in Australia. It stared Haryy Buttler an Australian Environmentalist and Naturalist who s considered by many to be a trailblazer for modern wildlife heroes and one of the first hands-on nature shows with nearly every type of animal from the swamps, deserts, mangroves, and rain forests of Australia. Which probably inspired many shows like "The Bush Tucher Man" (1987-1996) and Steve Irwins "The Crocodile Hunter" (1996-2004). I'd also recommend a 4 episode Australian TV series called "Bush Mechanics" from 2001. This off-beat series follows the exploits of the Bush Mechanics, a group of engaging Aboriginal characters who travel through central Australia. In each episode, the Bush Mechanics who come from the remote Warlpiri community of Yuendumu are presented with a new set of challenges - catching a car thief, getting a nephew out of jail, racing to an outback rock concert and travelling thousands of miles to gather pearl shells for a rainmaking ceremony. As they travel through the desert in their clapped-out vehicles, they solve multiple car problems with wacky and inventive bush repair techniques.

Another excellent series was Channel Four's 'Prospects' Starring Brian Bovell and the late Gary Olsen. Follows the adventures of a couple of London likely lads attempting to get by via a series of money making schemes. Think sort of like Minder with two Terry's and no Arthur. Very funny and has a great theme tune.

As someone that grew up in a very multicultural area in the 1980s, and also adored Asterix books, I never understood the default British hatred of the French. As far as I was concerned they were fine and Antoine de Caunes was/is a legend. I hope he's doing well now and I love him.

I had heard the title Gurney Slade but knew nothing about it. I want to watch it now. Rather lucky considering how old it is that it still exists. War Planets looks good too. The spaceships look like Babylon Five level cgi. Ie: great for it's time. Both excellent: Fred Bassett/The Perishers. We did talk about Willow the Wisp, but these were two other shows that were on in that five minute slot at the end of children's BBC1. Both had twenty episodes each that were five mins long. The former was made in 1976 and adapted the Daily Mail cartoon strip, with Lionel Jeffries as the voice of Fred. The latter adapted the Daily Mirror cartoon strip, with Leonard Rossiter voicing Boot the dog. They did do one very good episode based on the cartoon's annual summer storyline of Boot looking into a rockpool and the crabs in the pool going crazy because 'the eyeballs in the sky' had returned. Both great fun.

I remember the Paul Hogan Show would often do a skit where Hoges would explain some technique or other to do with bush craft, but then would totally mess it up in practice, with hilarious results. Who knows, maybe that's where he got the idea for his Crocodile Dundee character?

Forgotten/overrated: Chico and the Man (NBC 1974-1978) - Freddie Prinze starred as Chico, who would become the employee of Jack Albertson's Ed (the man) in an east LA garage. Or, at least that was the case until late third-season taping when Prinze made the decision to shake off this mortal coil. The result was cancellation after the fourth season and the show becoming absolute poison to syndication due to the stench of death around it. And the death also contributed to NBC's near-death experience that it was going through in the late 1970s/early 1980s. While it was well-acted and produced, it's overrated because, honestly, I've watched a few episodes and find it downright depressing; remember that it was a sitcom.

Red Green Show..? So.. Just a straight up rip of Home Improvement then? The presenters even look the same.
@ronaldwayne7092

Home Improvement was largely about a family. Red Green was about a community, more or less, and it was a sketch-com with sitcom elements rather than being a straight sitcom. Oh, and the show first aired five months before the debut episode of Home Improvement. And that's not counting that the character of Red Green appeared on three (yes, three) other shows before he got his own series.

I remember Everyday Maths, but only got to see one episode of it about 3 times a year, when we were on half-term holidays, due to the fact that not everywhere around the country took the same week off, the BBC would repeat one whole weeks worth of programming, meaning there were no holiday programmes on, (like you got during the Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays.) The worst part was, they often repeated the same episode of each show, every year, (whether it be the half-term week between Christmas and Easter, Easter and Summer or Summer and Christmas), so, after a few years you got to know them quite well. I think the ones that centred around Halloween were probably the most memorable ones, for me. Word and Pictures in particular with the one about witches, evokes memories of the time. Presented by Henry, 'Frankie Barrow', Woolf, if I remember correctly.
