I'm not surprised. Typical. His mind is going much faster than his words. So the words ther come out if his mouth don't always make sense, because only a small part of his inner monologue is actually voiced

Truly, one of the most astounding manifestos on contemporary literature that we have. Can Xue’s ideas about experimental fiction, her full-throated denunciation of post-mod art and call for unity of physical and spiritual is deeply inspirational. This talk should be legendary, though it isn’t. An extraordinary video. Thanks!

What a wonderful interview with my favorite writer! The student who wrote a senior thesis on Han Kang’s books asked excellent questions at the end of the session (at circa 1.21.00). Since I admire Han Kang’s writing as much as she does, I would be very interested in reading her thesis if it’s available. If you happen to see this comment, please let me know, and I will share my email address. Hans from the Netherlands

Andrew. You wrote the book that needed to be written. You gave Mariah the intellectual rigour she deserves. You did not write a hagiographical sycophantic book that wouldn't critique Mariah properly. The fact that there wasn't much in the way of negative critique was not because you are a blinded lamb, it was because on a fair assessment, which you gave, there isn't a great deal negative to day about Mariah. You captured her artistry, giving equal weight to her songwriting and production abilities ad to her voice. I get how Mariah feels annoyed, and we do too, that she doesn't get the recognition as a holistic musician she deserves. This however, is not because she's a woman, or because she's black, or because she doesn't present as a musician so much as a diva. Well, those things are likely to play a role. But the chief reason is because her voice is so staggering in ots virtuosity, so rich, so mellifluous, so powerful, so changeable, so melodic, so instrumental, so able to carry narrative, that it blows nearly all other aspects of her out of the water. There is something Godly about it, and let's think. Where are the stars today who can sing rhe say she could in her prime? Where are the Mariah's and Whitneys? You'd think a few would show up. But noone, not even Grande, whose music is so influenced by Mimi and who had a terrific voice, comes close to matching Mariah's mastery of the vocal. She understands voice aswell as being able to sing. You wrote beautifully about the phenomenon of her vocals. You analysed some of her best work. Which brings me to my key point. There was something uncanny and otherwordly about this book. I kept, over and over again thinking oh my god this is exactly what i think...this is sooo true...wow i could have written this myself...is this man reading my mind? The reason it feels like you get her get it and get us so well is because you wrote the truth, of which there is only one version. Masterful work. If I had to point out a negative, I would say that you did not need to keep it relatively short. I feel like ypur experience as a journalist, writing essays, put you in a mindframe where you thought you couldnt go on and on because you'd lose the audience. However, its the fans buying it and loving it. You could have doubled the amount written and we would read it. Concision is good but the main element of the book that suffered from it not being longer was the analysis of her songs parts. Each that you did was briliant, but her repertoire is huge and you had to miss out so many songs. You did pick out the ones that illustrated a particular point you were making, which is a very good and smart editorial decision. But i get the feeling you have more to say. What I truly think you should do is another book, focusing on each of Mariah's albums, going in depth to talk ablut the best tracks on each album with some research, your views, what they illustrate, what you think they are about, how they biographise her, the evolution. I accept that more music analysis would have changed the book into something else though. You also gave a great amount of time explaining what she means to the fans, to the lgbt community, to the music industry on a psychological and sociological level, which was great. You expounded upon her personality. All in all one of the best books I have ever read and I have read thousands too many to count. Finally someone who gets Mariah but who also has the deep intelligence required to really deconstruct why Mariah matters. I recommend it. It is a serious piece of work which takes seriously a seriously important woman. Well done. One thing I am desperate to know (I haven't yet watched this video, I shall now but had to gwt that off my chest first) is whether Mariah is aware of the book, whether she has read it, whether she had reached out to you at all. If she hadn't been made aware of it someone needs to do something about that. And she should fire her publicist. I haven't seen her do anything to help promote it, by for examole tweeting about it. I imagine it's because she's humble and doesn't want people to think SHE thinks she matters. But Mariah needs to read this to claim it, and be happy that however misunderstood she had been in life, there are people who get her intimately. Bravo! Ps that im the only watcher or commenter here is appalling.

@@wenyeow thank you for responding, i'm very happy you saw the response. I could tell you wanted to say even more. I suspect it could be a neverending book 😆 Just...well done! A question I have for you, another Mariah connoisseur, is what you think she should do next. I'd love a jazz album where she does some classics and writes a few herself. I feel that genre would best display her vocal abilities beyond belting and high notes. Her virtuosity would shine here. I also feel she has more straight up Mariah albums in her. Or do you think she should remain leaning into legacy, which at this point she more than deserves to do? I just feel like there is no need to do that just yet, though I admit greed is a huge factor in that belief. And also, i see you answered my question regarding whether she has seen it, and i respect your answer. There does need to be distance between artist and critic for the critic to remain impartial, but also so the artist remains authentic rather than responding to critique. I do however feel strongly that it would be a travesty if she didn't read it. It's a scholarly piece of work about her that she deserves to read, from a purely curious, intellectual mindframe. I believe she would feel seen and understood and that this wouldn't affect your critical faculties. Because you wouldn't have to initiate further contact, but mainly because you already have the thought in your mind; you are mindful of the benefits of distance. It is so late in her career too that the retrospective vibe of it precludes her responding in any particular way. Indeed it could actually encourage her to go for it again.i genuinely mean that. I think this book could literally encourage Mariah to go into the studio and make yet another stellar album. If I were you I would throw off the humble aspect of your very thoughtful and considered personality and reach out (or better, get someone you know to reach out) to her team so that she might read it. I think it's too good a piece of musical analysis for the subject to be oblivious to its existence. No pressure!
