Dang I miss racing jet-skis, it was so damned fun, but dang it was an EXPENSIVE sport, everyone knows the more ya spend, the faster ya go. I raced long ago, 1995 Modified Runabout State Champ of Arizona, a 12 race season, some races at Parker, some at Lake Pleasant, the finals of course were at Havasu in front of the Nautical Inn, the races consisted of slalom and closed course races, I won slalom at all 12 races, what’s amazing that I was able to win the Az state title but I didn’t win even one of the closed course races, always getting 2nd or 3rd. I was at a bit of a handicap because my Sea Doo had the small 580cc motor, everyone else 650’s and 750’s, but I had a guy named Jerry Hall tune and modify my ski, for handling on my 2 seater Sea Doo SP, I got the 3 seater sponsons and put them that made a HUGE difference, like it was on rails, it turned so tight that the G force darn near pitched you off. So I had the head cut to increase compression, an inline rev limiter that I just turned it up all the way. White brothers pipe and water box, took off the 38mm carb and got a 48mn Mikuni, ran 110 octane/low lead Av gas, a very low pitch prop for quickness rather than top speed, at the start IT LAUNCHED!!..once I FINALLY got the carb jetted properly, the snap off the line damn near jerked my arms outta Socket, it even left the 750’s in my wake, but if the course had a king back straight the 750’s would catch me because of the low pitch impeller, but on the tighter sections I’d pass them back up most of the time ….I also sanded out at least 125 pounds from inside the hull, jeez that took hours and hours to do but in the end well worth it. Even tho I didn’t win a single race all season, but winning slalom every time and getting 2nd and 3rd consistently got me the title….now in 2024 seeing the world finals, man the runabouts look SOOO fast and all the skis are 4 stroke now right?…..do they still have 2 stroke races at the finals? ….
