Your photo at 03:45 of the close-up with fish in beak is the best photo I've seen you show. Very good! By way of constructive critique I would humbly venture to suggest that your videos would be improved by editing out the zoom-ins and outs, and also some of the lees stable moments. Onwards and upwards though, eh? Keep sharing and all the best Paul. Graham. 👍🙂👍 P.S. can't help you on the guns question as it's an area I have no experience of.

Having many pairs of eyes and ears definitely helps with spotting things which one person on their own could easily miss. Plus, the exchange of knowledge is invaluable. I noticed one of your Adders had a cloudy eye which, I'm given to understand, is an indication that it's not far from its next moult / shed. I'm actually in the process of post-production on a soon-to-be-released video about Adders! 🙂 👍

Hi Paul, when I spotted the thumbnail I had to have a proper look, this reserve is one where I have been working as volunteer for more than a decade!, it is very nice to see and recognise so much. Watching this reminds me of how much I actually miss when I am there all day working!, I must get out there on some other days. The massive deer herd use some of the more secluded parts of the reserve to rest and shelter and combined with numerous Muntjac have a significant impact on the plant life The other notable mammal is the resident population of Water Voles who have been doing very well in the current absence of Mink. The Marsh Harriers have been breeding there successfully for many years now but as you say last year's nest was predated, the pair have now been there for several weeks and do appear to have started a nest. There are also loads of Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps, Goldfinches, Treecreepers, Wrens and Chetti's Warblers. One of the interesting aspects of this site is the fact that it offers so much interesting wildlife on such a small site. Cheers, Richard.

I saw the heard of deer in your video when I was at Fowlmere a couple of weeks ago, I tried to get close but unfortunately the wind was behind me so I stopped as didn’t want to spook them. The image isn’t worth it if the subject your trying to capture will be disturbed or will get stressed whilst trying to capture it, a fantastic wildlife photographer on KZbin who makes this his No1 priority is Morton Hilmer who is an incredible photographer from Denmark.

A great video Paul, really enjoyed it! I’m one of the RSPB volunteers who occasionally mans the reception hut at Fowlmere, sorry nobody was around when you visited to give more information on the reserve. The new loo is now up and running, so hopefully we can more often have a presence at the reserve. The boardwalks and a new bridge over the stream have been recently improved and upgraded by the warden with a team of volunteers, they do great work. As people have told you the reserve was originally farmed as watercress beds until the late 1960s and the site was bought by the RSPB in the 1970s with money raised by the RSPB junior branch. The site has SSSI status and the chalk stream is an important feature. Water originally came from natural springs from chalk aquifers but due to recent high levels of abstraction it is now supplemented by water being pumped in from elsewhere. The stream is the start of the river Shep that rises here and the water eventually flows into the river Cam. I’m sure someone at the RSPB can give more detailed information. I think from your video that Warbler you saw along the stream might be a Chiffchaff, some have been seen feeding along there in the reeds recently. There are Cetti’s warblers around too, often by the big Reedbed hide. Good that you got to see the Owls and Harriers. A good source of sightings at the reserve is the blog by Ade Cooper here cooperandscott.wordpress.com/

Great video Paul. I was there a few ago & managed to see the Barn Owl hunting right by the entrance, but apart from that it was very quiet. Have you tried The Lodge RSPB Reserve? It’s about a 25 minute drive from Royston & I understand is the RSPB Head office. The strange thing is though there is no water on the reserve which was a big disappointment as that is one of the first areas I tend to head for as love to watch & photograph waterfowl. The other reserve which is quite good & not a million miles away is Lackford Lakes in Burry St Edmonds.

Looks like a decent reserve Paul, and the first I'd heard about it. It was interesting to hear your reasons for doing what you're doing, your background in landscape photography, and the challenges you're having with re-acquainting yourself with various bird species. Some decent photos in there too. 👍 Glad you found out about the chalk stream. The RSPB webpage about the reserve mentions it. 🙂

Nice one Paul. Good advice about having a "Plan B". That hadn't occurred to me but it makes total sense, especially if you're travelling some distance to a place. Good smooth footage off the k1 there and it'll be interesting to see the difference in sound between the onboard mic and an external mic. You did well to make the most of an infrequent opportunity with the snowy conditions. Good stuff! 👍👍👍
