Now here’s the million dollar question: suppose as a kid you start out with the WTA forehand but as you grew up and got stronger with your upper body, you didn’t feel the pressure to switch to an ATP forehand to appear more “manly” (because let’s face it, in this highly toxic world of tennis where ATP players are so afraid to come out of the closet, 75% of the rec plays and amateur players’ true reason for switching to the ATP forehand is to appear more manly, and even statements like “I wanna hit my forehand like Roger “ is really a thinly veiled “I wanna play more masculine”, but I digress). So let’s say this player who started out with a WTA forehand stayed with his WTA forehand ( because he was raised in a household vacuum of grandmas and a dad who didn’t care if his son was gay or not m). So he gets stronger , but keeps his WTA forehand ….so how will he fare against the other guys with ATP forehands? Keep in mind that he would have more brute strength and height to handle the heavy pace and topspin from the guys and in fact these shots will sit up perfectly to his wheelhouse with the pace he craves and allow him to whack that mofo ball flat down and hard for an offensive shot. For those of you with sophisticated abilities to put yourself in someone else’s shoes: this scenario would be akin to when you ever hit with a guy/girl your level who for some reason hits the ball hard and with lots of topspin but since their shots feed perfectly into your wheelhouse you are able to hit it back rather effortlessly and hit it back with conviction, which makes them wonder how in the world you were able to put away the ball so well off their offensive shot.

Great points! You should do a video showing an extended mini-tennis warm-up session. There actually are not that many KZbin videos that show longer mini-tennis clips. Usually they are just a few seconds. I would like to see 5 minutes of a high-level mini-tennis cooperative rally.

It appears that the population disagrees with you, as pickleball is a massively more popular sport than tennis. The statistics are overwhelming, but you don’t need them. Simply drive by virtually any park in America and observe which courts are getting the play. I’m a former not-very-high-level junior tournament tennis player and love the sport as a spectator, but I’m now hooked on the loud obnoxious sport instead.
@TomAllsopp

From my experience coaching both, pickleball is getting more people out there hitting balls. But once they’ve played for a bit they’re wanting to play tennis. Just my experience.

@ Resource allocation has caused a lot of conflict between the 2 sports. I’ve been directly involved with this as president of a large pickleball club, and we were fortunately able to build a long term plan to meet the needs of both constituencies. You must live in a far more tennis- enthusiastic area than I have experienced. In Nevada, California, and now Florida I see packed pickleball courts with people waiting, and empty tennis courts. These things ebb and flow. In the 70s, everyone including me was obsessed with tennis.

Impressive skills. IMO there are many ways to use tennis equipment to have fun - play with less of the court, less pressurised balls, remove the serve, raise or lower the net. It is very flexible and can be made as accessible as pickleball. The problem is mental - the (adult) ego - adults seem to want to play full court with brand new balls, powerful rackets and standard rules, serving. If you are not reasonably skilled, playing like that is tricky.
@TomAllsopp

Exactly, even 10 year olds here complain if you use a training ball, but it develops more skills. With regulare balls it trains the coaches more than the players. I have to hit it perfectly to players all day long. With training balls I can hit with a variety of spins and power that make it more beneficial and fun for a lot of players.

I play both - IMHO any kind of tennis is better then pickleball. But the courts are so small and the game has basically no learning curve so it will be popular. But if given the chance to play any kind of tennis or pickleball - I choose tennis. Pickleball is useful though if you want to play something like tennis with seniors who don't play sports though. That is who it was designed for.

The actual history is that Pickleball was invented for bored children. Currently, the fastest growing demographic is young adults. Pickleball is a bit like golf; some of the more skillful shots don’t look very impressive. The game is more of a hands game and requires very fast reflexes at the higher levels. It is interesting to see how poorly former top tennis pros are doing at their attempts to play pro pickleball. None have broken into the elite levels, although Jack Sock may eventually do so. I played lower level junior tennis and was a teaching pro at a country club, but made the switch when my shoulder broke down. Pickleball is definitely easier on the body.

I played in a pickleball tournament while visiting my father in law in Florida last week. I was asked how long I've been playing pickleball. I said it was my second time since Monday. They rolled their eyes and said "oh no". I killed most of the players. If you want an ego boost go play pickleball as a tennis player. If you want to see flaws in your tennis strokes play mini tennis.
