It is! We use spray primer too! We use a mix of different primers depending on the mini and how many we are doing. Spray, air brush or paint on.

I believe that is one from a kickstarter from blacklist games fantasy series 1. While we have enjoyed the minis we’ve painted we had a lot of trouble compared to other campaigns.

They actually were primed ☺️. The original minis were a red/pink color and were primed white. You can still see a bit of the red showing thru the primer at the start of the video.

I haven’t personally tried that yet but I’ve seen people prime grey and then just do one dry brush white. I’ve had to take a break from painting and I’m looking forward to trying some new things soon.

@@Princess_Quorra I tried it and it came out bad. Grey is way too dark and the slap chop didn’t come out good on grey. Pure white primer is way way better for speed paints

In order for it to have the slap chop effect you would need to mix your regular acrylics with a speed paint medium otherwise the shadows and highlights wouldn’t show like they do with speedpaints.

I agree. I wasn’t happy with the green but the original speedpaint set didn’t have a lot of greens to choose from. Glad you have an idea how to start your box

Thank you. I did it when there were only the original speedpaints and not a lot of green choices. I just didn’t end up loving the green once it was finished ☺️ but I didn’t think I’d have liked orc skin either and I don’t think speedpaint medium would have made me like it either. I just didn’t like the actual color of it not just the darkness/lightness.

It’s a term used for technique used to paint minis that is meant to be quick. Kinda like the slapchop.

I tried a couple different techniques on non translucent minis to see if I could figure something out that works. I did eventually come up with something but then didn’t get a chance to make a video before I had to take a break from painting. I still plan to make one though.

We had already painted Rohan before deciding to film War of the Ring Minis so no video. I used: Camo Cloak for their cloaks, shields, and base rim. Plate mail silver for the spear heads and helmets Harden leather for the straps on the weapons, belts, and reins on the horse. Dark wood for the spear shaft. Holy white for their helmet feathers. Matt white for the horse on the shield. Runic grey was used in their saddle pad and stirrups. Silver was used for the armour. Gold was used to trim the infantry shields and to rivet the cavalry shield. The hair and beards were not specific and varied to give variety. The horses used a mix of Dark wood and Hardened leather at different ratios to give a little variety in the horses as well. (recommend going very light on the dark wood to start since it is much darker than Hardened leather) Overall I used more colors on these minis than some others simply because I was having more fun painting these. Yes. We are still waiting on FS2 miniatures as well. This mini was one of first painted when we received FS1. Decent minis but terrible company.

It would be interesting to see with white hair. I just chose some simple colours for my first time trying this method.

No problem, it’s more just what I do, so I slapchop, paint metallics then Speedpaint/Contrast the whole thing!

Gotcha thanks. First I read it as a question then reread it as a statement so wanted to clarify which it was 😂. I have used speedpaints over metallics before especially over silver when I want to have a different colour metal(blue, purple, etc) but for this I did want the metal part of his weapon to just be shiny metal.

So sorry I missed this comment. Thanks for your detailed comment. I have heard of using different undercoats for a modified slapchop but haven’t yet tried any. This sounds like one that I’d like to try out.

No we do not thin out our speed paints that we use in videos. If we have used a speedpaint medium to thin out the colour we will show it in the video but this shouldn’t change the consistency of the paint. We do make sure that our bottles are well shaken before use. We don’t thin out acrylic paints either. If we do thin something out for some reason it would be stated in the video. I hope this helps for our videos at least.

Are you talking about painting faster in real life or the video being sped up? If you are talking about the actual painting I did not paint faster than usual. This video is older but I actually was and still am quite a new mini painter. I’ve had to take a break from painting but I’m working at being able to again. Here I was trying out the slapchop technique for the 2nd time and it turned out better than my 1st one. I am happy with progress at something new. If you are talking about the video being sped up then there isn’t really much to do and still post a short.

Thanks. This was my second attempt at it. Still figuring out how much dry brush to do. Priming grey sounds interesting with just the white dry brush. Although without the black base you would only have 2 colours under your speedpaints so you would lose some of the base,shade,highlight and maybe some of the texture and depth too that you get with the black prime and 2 dry brushes. I haven’t had a chance to watch the video as I haven’t been online the past bit but I’ll check it out when I have a chance.

@@Princess_Quorra if you watch the army painted videos on using speed paints they only do a white prime. The paint itself settles in the recesses and created the shading. Using grey with a white drybrush just gives a bit more highlight

Yes that’s true but they aren’t doing a slapchop so not quite the same. They are allowing/relying on pooling for shading but aren’t going to get the same effect as using slapchop. It could be quicker depending on how much detail you go into but I think it all depends on what look you are going for for which method is best.
