Summary Francis Fukuyama discusses the critical role of identity in politics, highlighting its impact on social movements and the future of democracy. Highlights 🗣 Identity is more than a label; it involves a deep sense of self deserving of recognition. ✊ Movements like Me Too and Black Lives Matter seek respect and justice for marginalized groups. 🌍 Nationalist movements worldwide emerge from a desire for recognition and identity, such as in Catalonia and Quebec. 📉 Identity politics shift focus from economic issues to cultural and national identities, leading to polarization. ⚖ Democracy requires a unifying national identity to integrate diverse groups and maintain social cohesion. 📈 Populism rises as a backlash against globalization and immigration, reshaping political landscapes. ⚠ The challenge for modern democracies is balancing specific identities while fostering shared values for unity. Key Insights 🧠 Recognition is Fundamental: The need for acknowledgment of one’s identity can drive political engagement, showcasing the psychological dimensions of political affiliation. ⚖ Social Justice Movements: Movements like Me Too and Black Lives Matter highlight the pursuit of dignity and respect, setting a moral framework distinct from more aggressive nationalist movements. 🌐 Global Nationalism: Nationalist movements worldwide reflect a universal quest for identity recognition, demonstrating the interconnectedness of identity and politics across cultures. 🎭 Shift in Political Landscape: The transition from economic to identity-based politics signifies a fundamental change in societal priorities, complicating traditional political alignments. ✨ Integrative National Identity: For democracy to thrive, a shared national identity that embraces diversity is crucial, as it fosters unity amidst differing identities. 🚪 Backlash Against Immigration: Increased immigration has led to a populist backlash, revealing deep-seated anxieties about cultural displacement and national identity. ⚡ Challenge of Polarization: The rise of identity politics poses a significant challenge to democratic discourse, necessitating a focus on shared values to bridge divides.

Wait, what? Iran, Turkey & Egypt were countries before 19th century? What are you talking about?! Turkey was established in 1923 by Ataturk over Ottoman ruins. Turkey did not exist before 20th century, let alone 19th century. Iran has been there for thousands of years.

Abbas Milani keeps repeating the lie that the 1979 revolution was for “a democratic Iran”. A brief look at the forces involved in the anti shah coalition that were almost entirely comprised of different factions of marxist and islamist (or both) groups reveals how ridiculous this shameless lie is. People involved in that revolution were fighting for ideological ideals that had nothing to do with democracy. They were ant-west, anti-imperialist and anti free market, internationalist and against the concept of modern nation states

Could you include links to the various videos you referenced? I discovered this video as an optional resource in my class. And while I was able to find the videos discussed, it may benefit future viewers and students.

K Content fans show consumption patterns that even Koreans cannot understand. Koreans usually comparing and choose a few contents and we enjoy it for a while and forget it quickly. But overseas K-Content fans love and remember every K Contents. They have long drama / movie lists. They have already memorized every song in the chart, and now they are activating old-fashioned content that has been forgotten. Just because I like the Beatles doesn't mean I like the British food they eat, but K fans do. In the vlog I saw recently, a Polish K fan visited an Austrian friend to tour and ate Korean food, not Austrian food. And in return, an Austrian friend visited Poland and held a party with K food, not Polish food And the two men said in Korean that they appreciate and love each other. In Korean culture, we can say we love each other among same-sex friends. But I guess in commonsense, it's impossible in their culture. Anyway, they understood Korean culture and using Korean words and K-food for communications. a strange but joyful and pleasant phenomenon

Very stupid wishful thinking, it is not a myth anymore how bad it is after the 2030 World Expo bid result that has shown the non-popularity of Korean Kpop, Kdrama, "Gangnam Style"s' shake, shake, twist, twist, dance, and dance totally Westernized non -local boring cultures! Out of 165 votes Korea was 29 against its opponent Riyakh 119, despite the over 500 days to over 100 cities' desperate promotions with the all-out performance of all the popular Korean celebrities including one from the "Octopus Game". Who cares much about those now? Look as if only the Western countries are popping their allies up for wishful popularities. In recent years, there have been over 100 K Drama, and K Variety shows which have been completed and couldn't find any buyers.

I’ve been addicted to KDramas since 2011 - they are the TV shows I mainly watch. I got into them looking for live-action anime from Japan. You know what? I couldn’t FIND JDramas!!!! Not even on Crunchy Roll! As any anime fan who suffered thru the 90s can tell you, Japan is not known to market internationally very well. Korea on the other hand actively promotes its entertainment worldwide. Would have been nice to actually see those videos BTW. I have BTW seen both before.
