Okay, you have it mostly right. You want to make contact with both the pin and pad, then flood the solder in. You seem to have either bad flux or little flux as the solder seems to go cold fast. Additional flux would probably help. Also, I can't can't tell if this is plated through hole but you probably could stand to turn the iron up. The solder should flow into the joint. Otherwise not bad and a good starting point for novices
