According to the prophecy 144000 is a very specific group.Concernige this matter there are two methods in the mind of people. SIMBOLIC and LITERAL. Though the the book of Revelation reveils in SIMBOLIC language, this specific number is a literal number. But Sister White says we should not argue on this matter.
