I used to be so wrong about practicing this spider exercise dude, I used to think that the faster I play the better I'll get, It's somewhat true but not when your guitar sounds like someone running on wooden floor ... and I used to immediately lift up the previous finger after I put on next one, Those were the to biggest mistakes ,

I am having a lot of trouble having any sort of autonomy with my ring finger. I cant seem to move it to the next string without picking up the pinky finger from the previous string. It is super frustrating that i cant even do what you are doing on day 1. Any thoughts or advice on this?
@downcode5 күн бұрын
It's completely normal. Practice something else, come back to this after a couple of months... or bruteforce it with extreme focus on proper technique.. either works :)

I came back to this exercise, did it at 80 bpm metronome then moving up to 120 then moving up to 80 bpm doubletime. Just fret 1-2-3-4, and right hand fingerpicking index middle ring middle. I focused on the tone that I was making and not speed, tryinf to get it to sound even and not buzz and try to let the notes ring and not cut short. After just doing this for 30 mins to an hour my playing was much smoother and sounded better and sounded more consistent and considerablu so. It also improved my hand synchronization making it easier to play scales faster. Keep in mind before i did this i had been playing already for an hour or two. For whatever reason just doing that reminded my how to play properly and not sloppily. My point is this drill really reinforces good technique if you do it properly and I would do this before every practice session and even during just to dial in the proper tone out of your fingers. Especially importsnt for fingerpicking. Almost like tuning your fingers instead of guitar. Important thing I would say is to focus on tone. Timing is important too. Speed is tertiary, you must keep tone and timing consistent, then speed. Thats why he starts off so slow. Even at 60 bpm you should scrutinize the tone and make it sound as even as possible, and make it sound how you want it to on each individual string, for example if one string sounds too bright when playing you can angle your plucking fingers to get a warmer tone or if you want a brighter tone, or reduce string scratching noise when plucking, you can play with plucking fingers more perpendicular on that string. And just reinforce this over and over again.

I tried watching his lessons a lot of times in the past, and they just don't resonate with me. I really want to like his stuff (by default, I respect the Japanese), but I guess it's not for me, it's too boring. The fact that he mentored John Mayer doesn't help. I'll just go back to John Petrucci lessons or something like that :D

what would be interesting is to see if these exercises improve your guitar playing or just the exercise playing like say you pick a song u never played on day 1 and try to play it, then 30 days of just the exercise, no practicing the song, then u test to play the same song only 30 days later with the exercise. i honestly think u would play the song almost the same

Been playing off and on for about 20 years. Never really got any good outside of a few intros, solos and on whole instrumental. Never heard about spider walking until a few days ago. I watched this and saw how he was struggling on day 1 to keep his fingers still, and thought “damn. How can anyone struggle with this?” All of that is to say, this is a very humbling exercise. I was certain I knew enough that I didn’t need to try too hard for this exercise.
