A true PPD MUST be able to withstand and thrive under social pressure. Kids hugging on them, folks reaching out to pet them, other dogs getting up in their business, cats running around, etc. True PPD’s are few & far between….especially amongst Mal’s

haha! Mr Mark you are too funny! Try to find real knowledgable dog people around here! It took me 7 years to find a good training club near me, not even an IPO type club. Always check out the classes/training/knowledge FIRST, or the trainers may mess up your dog and create habits you have to undo later. And trust me, its HARDER that way.

I am the owner of 2 of these malinois dogs. I have been the only human in my household with malinois dogs for the past 15 years after leaving my parents home back when I was 25 years old. I have raised them alone!.. and I have managed to control their tendency to want to chew on household stuff. However, when it comes to furniture and decorating a house, I am a minimalist. I am not a materialistic woman like alot are. I know a married couple who owned a malinois for a short while and the wife was upset over their malinois ruining their $5000 sofa and her fancy curtains. Her husband had to get rid of the dog immediately after that at his wife'srequest. It made me realize and how I love being the solo owner of these dogs completely under my control ! Anyway , this married couple asked me if I wanted the malinois for free...I said no. I already owned two and still do. They are my children and I am very protective of them as they are for me 😃

I have a Kangal and am very interested in your training techniques . He is a smart boy and GIANT . He is 120 at 12 months . He is learning very well. Wait , sit , shake , lay down , come . They are stubborn and won't let you be the " threat judge " He knows not to bark at the neighbor in his yard , or his dog which is awesome ! I live in MOntana at the edge of the wilderness and he would like to be the Top Dog Deer chaser !! When he is outside guarding and I tell him to stop barking and pull him in with is lead he gets testy with me . THey like to jump and play rough , but I wonder how women deal with them while ovulating and menstruating , this changes his behavior , he's neutered , at 5 months . I studied the breed and he is better than I could have hoped for , just we are "bossing " each other and he out weighs me :) And I think he knows it now !

I have a German Malinois (German Shepherd mixed with Belgian Malinois - she is more Malinois then Shepherd) and as I was this video, I kept calling her over to tell her how much I love her. This dog is probably the best thing in my life (To my girlfriend: I'm so sorry if this pisses you off if you end up reading this somehow). She protects me at my music studio, at home, and anywhere. I let her go everywhere with me. She goes with me when I go biking, when I'm on a scooter, on a hoverboard, on a long walk, skateboard, anything really. I let her be a little lazy for only a few days but then I push her hard at times (Kind of like interval training). I get worried about leaving her in the backyard because of bugs/black widows, etc but also mainly because I get anxious when I don't know where she is (I love my "bitch" - lol). She has already saved me from about 2-3 different encounters where my life could have been in danger and that only grew our bond closer. I've become so dependent on her that I even find ways to keep her active/entertained while she's indoors in small places (Example: I bought this toy food tray where she has to flip over plastic pieces to get to the food and that keeps her busy a while). I've taught my dog over 35 commands. The 4 I started with were (Yes, No, Good, Bad) and I incorporated a shock collar (I don't ever use the SHOCK feature and instead just used the collar to teach her what yes, no, good, and bad are. She is so smart... to the point where I truly believe she knows based on how I am talking to someone if they are a threat to me, or if they are just my relative/someone close I'm having a conflict with. Here's a few things I taught her: Smell & Search (She will smell the treat in my hand and then go search for it), Poop on command, Eat on command (By default she will eat what I give her but if I tell her to wait and don't eat then she will wait until I tell her), Stay Alert (She will look out and be very alert with her ears pointing up), how to ring a bell if she wants to go poop, or a separate bell if she wants food/water. Thank you for this video, I have enjoyed it and look forward to giving my dog the best life she can have with me.

i am glad that the mali's never make it in the shows. they have too much character to let some judge touch him feel for 2 balls and the dog shows it being untactful to him, good mali's keep it up, they are not for all and even a good breeder should show concern how your dog is making out, i started an apprentice ship with a mali society called Antwerp in coney island ny, the owners were long time trainers, but they also tried hard to keep it a secret which of course came out in out wars, the beeding today is being screwwed with as we did with every dog in USA, bar non. the mali's legs are way to long, they cannot do sharp turnes as fossils show in end of ice age the very fast flat faced bear could not catch new prey that had a fast turn, Rabbits and hares to name one. these animals have been found with broken fronnt legs. the mali today has to be brought in a small pinch of quality pit bulldog to keep his legs shorter and more powerful overall

as per yur other video: I thought I was the ONLY one who could not stand abbreviations for this breed. It repulses me and I have heard so many people ask about my "mal" or "maly" but I am not lazy I always have the time to say the correct name Belgian Malinois.People in this country are so arrogant they think they never have to pronounce someones name correctly, like in Israel there are No J's but all Y's and instead of pronouncing as such over here they will actually change the name before pronouncing it right and add a J. like with the pro golfer forgot his name. ugg

Just discovered you, excellent breakdown of the breed.I may be one of the few who adopted one with zero knowledge of the breed that is overwhelmingly happy with the traits.At the shelter he was listed as a GSD mix and having just lost our GSD of 10 years to cancer jumped at the chance to own another. Well after just one day we knew he was not anything like our GSD.Now a little over a year has gone by and we feel blessed to have rescued him.Being empty nesters has allowed us to have the time that is needed with this breed to get the most out of him and he has made us get the most out of ourselves.I look forward to watching the rest of your videos now that I've discovered them , Thanks...

Lorenzo Manx Same situation here. I adopted a "German shepherd mix" 2 and a half months ago. Saw a clone of my dog standing next to the GSD at the AKC dog show on Thanksgiving. A few Google image searches later, I could confirm with certainty that I've now got myself a beautiful fawn Malinois. I thought his playfulness was due to his young age...he has way more energy than I was expecting in a GSD mix (obviously.) I'm doing my best to learn about the breed and give him the structure, exercise and training he requires. My arm feels like it's going to fall off from throwing the ball so much.

Great info. Comments were disabled on your video about e-collars. I just want to commend you on your decision not to use one. I've been training dogs since 1975 and I have never used an electroshock collar (let's call it what it is). For some reason with military and police dogs, specifically the GSD, they don't believe in starting obedience until the dog is 1 years old. This is outrageous. By then certain developmental windows have closed, so they resort to extreme measures to train the dog and get the required results in the time allotted.
@GallowsPole805 Жыл бұрын
If I may….Let me first say I’m an amateur at training but participated in a patrol k9 apprenticeship where I trained the basic obedience commands in a puppy and prepped him for his advanced nose, tracking, and apprehension training. I then got to continue as a decoy/agitator & training aide handler when he continued his advanced with Alderhorst. In addition I adopt retired Military Working Dogs through the DOD. I have only adopted Mal’s up to this point and I continue (to a certain extent) working obedience and desirable behaviors with them in their sunset years as my pet and best buddy ha ha. That being said… using an E-Collar (not a shock collar) as an accessory for direction and/or acceleration of desired behaviors is 100% legitimate, humane, and strategically/tactically effective for military/LE K9 work. We have advanced patrol work to the point where some (not all) patrol K9’s can work off leash/out of line of sight/out of auditory hearing environment. Think clearing a building with a mounted camera and apprehension/domination of a man if found in aforementioned building. If I wanted the dog to disengage and return to me a stimulation with the e collar is the most effective way to do that. Now, that dog will have been conditioned and trained on the e collar to respond to minute stimulations when engaged in work. It will be very clearly trained and established that the collar is not for punishment but rather a non verbal cue or command to perform whatever desired behaviors is expected. Usually it’s only 2 behaviors anyways: an out and return to heel &/or a apprehend the man when a verbal command is not safe due to combat footing. That’s it. Period. There is no punishment. There is no “flanking” ( strapping it near his/her genital area and cranking it on because you disregarded establishing a relationship with your dog and didn’t teach a instantaneous out upon command). There is no cranking it up when he’s on the bite so he’ll bite harder. Those that do that and employ those methodologies are sadists and have no business working with k9’s or being in police/military ranks. I’m not challenging you here…what do you think to this alternative training/practice methodology?
@OnPointDogs Жыл бұрын
@@GallowsPole805 The only people against using e-collars are those with zero experience with them, so they think we are electrocuting our dogs. I rate the e-collar as the 2d greatest tool for dog training, right behind the collar. I am referring to the modern day e-collars which give you 3 options: tone, vibrate, etc. You can condition your dog to respond to tone alone in one day.

What's the biggest difference between Dutch shepherds and Malinois?
@markleamer17757 жыл бұрын
I've owned several of both, and other than the difference in color, I don't really see much difference when it comes to temperament in general and in training. Many of both are cross bred with the other, so most aren't 100% one breed or the other anyway. Others may disagree but that's how I feel about it. Thank you for watching and thank you for your question.

Hello there Mr. Mark Leamer the Malinois man ever since that I saw you're video here in youtube, you made me want to have a berger mechelse herder even though that I'm inexperience in any breed of dog's. But now that I've had one that I bought to a breeder here in my country. the puppy looks so tough when it is in thier crates but when brought it home I observe that the puppy was not the one that I expected to behave. The puppy is nervy and never want to be touch. and everytime that I attempt to touch the puppy its trying to refuse or avoid my hand. Thats the time that I realized what you have been teaching to us that when we encounter a breeder whose puppy or dog's were not responsive to its owner or breeder we have to walk away and leave those breeder or owner or trader. because they dont know how to give the propper imprinting that every puppies should have.

I'd agree that, in general, a Mal is not the ideal dog to have around small children. However, if properly socialized and introduced to children at a young age, a Mal can be an outstanding family companion. Our Mal, now 15+ yo, is a superb example of a great family companion. This is a result of significant effort expended during his formative years. Otherwise great vid...thanks.

I have an 11 month old Malinois and she is an amazing little girl. She will play all day and sleep all night. Her ability to learn commands is impressive. She has such a high spirit and drive, it's infectious. She will retrieve for hours and always want to be with me. She loves everyone and charms strangers with her smile. When little kids come to pet her, she lays down and is in heaven with tiny hands petting all the right spots. In the evenings, I chip tennis balls up with a golf club. She drops the one she catches and patiently waits for the next one to come her way.
